When I found out the P5 was in the making, I was anxious to get my hands (and ears) on a pair. Well, I got them and here's the low down...
built: as expected, it is second to none in this price range. I know that many have reservation about the thin cord. I actually like it as it doesn't get in the way when I'm on the go. Thick cords are bothersome and unwieldy. Because it is easily replaced, I don't care if it doesn't last a decade. Aside from this, everything else about the unit is top notch...hard to believe they can sell it for just $300.
comfort: They are light and hugs the head very tightly. You can jog with these. Not as comfortable as bose qc15 because it sits over the ears instead of around. I think it's fine if you wear it for a couple of hours at a time. My ears are a little sore after just an hour.
sound: I own a pair of bose qc15 and I have to admit, these blow them away in every respect. The highs are much clearer. Voices are more opened. Bass is punchy and smoother. Of course, they are not as good at noise cancellation/isolation as the bose, but they are adequate for most settings. Just remember to tweak how they sit on your head. This affects the bass if they are not air tight over the ears. So how do they compare with their audiophile products? Perhaps a little unfair to compare them with a system costing as much as a car, but here goes...as good as they sound for headphones, you can still tell they are...closed ear headphones. There is a distinct coloration that sounds like drivers mounted in a "tube." This is very pronounced in the mid range. There isn't the stage presence and air that I'm used to. The bottom line is, I'm happy with them, but don't expect them to be more then what they are and they are mass consumer grade product just like the zep. …

I've owned the monster beats ever since they first came out and although the sound is very good, i found them really large and disliked the fact it required batteries. I picked these up to try out because I was very impressed with the slim size and industrial design (they are built with metal and leather).
I am a huge fan of these Bowers & Wilkins P5 Headphones. I’m no audiophile but these headphones deliver the whole package - best sound I’ve ever heard and an amazing retro design. I was a bit worried about the discomfort of the pads pressing on my ears but after about 3 days of use, the high quality leather pads “break in” and they are really comfortable.
I found these to be worth every penny. However, if you have a music collection with lower bitrate (under 256 kbps) I wouldn’t advise investing in high-end audio equipment. …

Picked these due to the fact that the QC15s need a battery to work. So happy I picked these! The sound quality is great. The biggest surprise to me is how well the noise isolation works. When you put these headphones on, they only slightly muffle background noise. However, when you click the play button, almost all background noise is eliminated! Only downside to these is the connector is not "L" shaped, so it sticks out of the headphone jack further. Not a deal breaker, but something to be aware of. …

These are great, as they eliminate a lot of the overbright, crashing highs in many other brands that can make listening to metal at volume painful. Good detail and separation means double kicks are punchy and riffs crunchy without any greater distortion that that intended by the band and their producer. I'm yet to find a musical style that doesn't sound great on these …

Don't write off noise canceling too quickly if you're a regular air traveller...
Funny, I'm readi Don't write off noise canceling too quickly if you're a regular air traveller...
Funny, I'm reading these reviews of the P5 because I'm looking at getting a pair...however, reading your question about flying - I've done a lot, domestic and international.
Unless you've experienced that moment with a pair of Bose QC15 when you have them on, hear the roar of the engines underneath, then "click" and it all goes away. I can't tell you whether they are as good pure sound wise as the P5s and you may be a Bose disliker on principle, but they sound is very good indeed and the ability to knock out all that cabin noise is worth every penny. They are also extremely comfortable and I often sleep on overnight flights in them, with no music, just the cord unplugged and the noise canceling on - for flying it is a first class experience. My only comparisons between the two have been in Apple retail stores and frankly I don't think there's a big sonic difference between the two. (I say this as the owner of a pair of B&W speakers which I love...).
If I can I tend to use them with a Total Bithead portable headphone amp and the pure sound of the vocals on e.g my Celtic Woman album is quite incredible - clean, involving, not a hint of harshness.
I'm looking at the P5s because I want a good quality (incredibly well built the P5s appear to be) headphone for use in a studio setting. Drums and noise canceling doesn't work and you can't turn off the noise canceling in the Bose and still have them work.
Just something to bear in mind... …

You probably need to investigate an external desktop amplifier that you put between the ipad and your headphones. For example, check out the Fiio range of amplifers. They have a range of desktop and portable amplifiers that should do the job. Warning! Check the connections as I understand the ipad has a different connection than the ipod. The Fiio range normally connect using USB ports, although I connect a Fiio amp to my ipod using the standard ipod connector port (its a connector also sold by Fiio). With the P3's this set-up gives excellent sound quality. …
