Apple Recommends For

Reducing desktop clutter by conveniently storing small items such as a backup hard drive or USB peripheral out of sight on an ingenious little shelf behind your iMac or Cinema Display.

BackPack is the perfect place to park portable hard drives, card readers or other USB peripherals that you want to hide, but need easy access to. Set your USB hub on the shelf and tie your cables to it for a super-tidy workspace. It's also a great place to stow your iPhone or iPod when charging.

Two shelves are better than one

Because BackPack is height adjustable, there's room for two. Hang one low for hard drives and one high for hubs and other gear. Or personalize your space by displaying action figures or a vase of flowers.

Hang tight with gravity

BackPack attaches to the back of the desk stand with two adjustable clips—and gravity holds the shelf in place. Because no screws come into contact with your Mac, it won't leave any marks or scratches.

Hidden benefits for your gear

This cool metal ventilated shelf elevates hard drives or other USB-powered peripheral devices for better air circulation and heat relief.

Why didn't I think of that?

Genius. This thing can hold a ton of weight. Okay... maybe not a ton, but a lot. I have a massive heavy 1TB WD "MyBook" hard drive that fills the tray completely. This little tray frees up that much more of my desk. Highly recommended! More

Great idea/ What took them so long?!

    • Written by from Lincoln Park

This is a great idea. It really cleaned up my desk. I have two externals on it right now. One 250GB and one 640GB. I have them on their sides so they fit just right. Although, if you have your iMac up against the wall, it will kick it out ~ 6" away from the wall. At $30, it is a little expensive, but looks great and it's functional. I highly recommend it. More

    Does it's job

    • Written by from Basking Ridge

    Pros:
    - Lots of different attachment pieces for iMacs and Apple Cinema Displays, very versatile.
    - Nice adjustment for any hight along the back.
    - Stays out of the way and out of sight.
    - Holds at least my external drive.

    Cons:
    - Not sure if it is worth the price for a piece of metal with a couple tool-less screws
    - Feels kinda flimsy if you push down on it a bit. Not sure exactly how much I would trust the 5 pound limit.

    Other thoughts:
Its on the back of my LED Cinema display and holding my Western Digital "My Passport" hard drive. It removes an item off my cluttered desk which is a plus but I would not consider it a necessity. So far it hasn't failed me by any means. It just does not feel sturdy enough for a 3.5" drive on it.

Nice little gadget. However difficult to put together and install.

    • Written by from La Mirada

Bought this the other day. It's really a neat idea and it does the job. However, it's very difficult to put together and install. Here are a few tips that I learned trying to put it together and install it.

    1. Open the box very carefully. There is a piece of foam holding the pieces in place. There are five different pairs of plastic clips to fit the various models and years of iMac stands and monitors; you use only one pair depending on your model. There is a piece of onion skin paper on top of the foam identifying the different sized clips. If you did as I did and opened the box carelessly, the clips will fall out and you won't be able to identify which pairs go together. At the time I was sure wishing the clips had identifying marks on them. After writing Twelve South about my assembly problems, they told me that the clips do indeed have identifying marks; they are on the inside of the clips on the "arch" part of the clips; very difficult to see, you need a flashlight or magnifying glass to be able to see the letters and numbers, so be careful.

    2. The clips have left and right orientation. You put one left and one right clip in the metal holders. The included instructions are pretty clear after that. The placement of the left and right clip is critical for the installation of the clip to the iMac stand. I've already complained to Twelve South; the screws on the metal clips are too short and fitting the metal Backpack shelf on to the iMac stand is difficult. It would be ideal if you had a large workspace to put the Backpack shelve on so you can easily get to the back of your iMac. As one other reviewer said, I doubt the Backpack shelf would hold 5 lbs. as Twelve South claims, but is plenty sturdy to hold a pocket Hard drive as it was designed for.

  • can you use more than one?

    • Asked by Andrew L from Hatfield

    Answer

Yes, you can. The height is adjustable, so according to the product page, you can fit two on the back. However, because you are storing hard drives, keep in mind that they need to 'breathe' to stay cool, or their life expectancy will go down. Also, keep in mind that if you use the hole in the display stand for routing wires, the wires may interfere with your storage abilities. So, I would say that two is the max, just because there isn't tons of vertical clearance. But, the shelves can hold 5 pounds, so you can stack the drives on top of each-other no problem! More

There is no metal-to-metal contact between the BackPack and the iMac - that means no scratching either. The part of the BackPack that actually touches the iMac stand are hard plastic Fit Clips (5 are included for different size iMacs). More
