Verbatim's First Portable HDD Win since buying SmartDisk.

    Written by JC from Bloomington

    Aug 8, 2009

Verbatim bought SmartDisk (makers of the FireLite), which wasn't so great at first. Portable HDDs went from magnesium cases to plastic ones, and USB wasn't really a viable option due to excessive power draw...
THIS drive wins back my patronage. Disclaimer: I've had this drive for only a day.

    Pros:
    Aluminum enclosure dissipates heat better.
FW 800 is, of course, fast.
USB: You only need ONE USB port to power the drive from a MacBook Pro (previous Verbatim HDDs required two ports, even on new computers). USB-to-Power cable is included for older computers.
Every cable you would need for this drive is included (4 different cables).
The carry-case has a pocket on the back for cables.

    Cons:
The drive gets pretty hot after about an hour sustained read/write. It's good to know the heat is transferring through the aluminum enclosure, but disappointing to know that much heat is generated at all. The temps, while of concern, should not affect drive performance. If you are planning on SUSTAINED read/write on-the-go (video editing, etc.) you may wish to go RAID 0 with LaCie's Little Big disk (two portable HDDs in RAID 0), or equivalent, for speed purposes.
Cables are short, but because the idea is to make them fit in the carry-case.

    Other:
Inside is a Western Digital Scorpio Blue. Good brand in HDDs, though I did not expect so much heat from a WD. I have a WD Scorpio Black @ 7200 RPM in my MacBook Pro that runs MUCH cooler. Since they're using WD drives, I would expect a 1 TB model out soon (maybe)...
