Easy & reliable for old video tapes

    Written by TH

I bought this to transfer a pile of old VHS home movies into iTunes. It could hardly be easier, and the quality seems quite good for only a hundred bucks (although I'd forgotten how crummy VHS looks compared to DVD).

The only issue I had is a couple of tapes had crinkled areas at the beginning, which it had a hard time with. But I was able to just skip forward a little bit to the non-damaged area and then it worked fine.

    Occasionally choppy, but otherwise fine

Written by HT from Highland Mills

Like the previous reviewer, I have also experienced some choppy video. The first few seconds of each recording are choppy (looks like dropped frames), and occasionally in the middle of recordings or after the transition from one scene to another. However, for > 95% of the recording it's fine. The recorded quality is good (my recordings are mpeg4 because I don't have enough hardware for H.264) and the software is exceptionally easy to use. I'm not sorry I bought it, but it is annoying to have to re-record video that was inexplicably choppy. I've asked Elgato for an explanation and will update this review if I get one. More

Choppy recording. Almost un-viewable. Hopefully gets a software update or I'll have to return it.

    Exceeded Expectations - Great Product

    Written by JB from Sussex

    Nov 29, 2009

Within 5 minutes of opening the box I was able to record video, edit it in iMovie and export it to YouTube, the process was amazing, far above my expectations. The audio and video was totally in sync and picture quality was awesome. I used it with my DirectTV DVR, and I plan on trying it on some other analog devices like DVD player, and old VHS tapes. I am excited to capture more content. More

    Worked great !

Easy to use. Worked great. Of course the quality is only as good as the tape image being transferred. I would recommend. Transferred all my years of VCR tapes and very pleased. More

Yes, the Hybrid can be use to capture from VHS tapes as well. There a some differences between the way the Hybrid does it, and the Video Capture.

    • The Hybrid captures in MPEG-2 format, which is great if you want to go directly to DVD (using Toast for example), but it's not easy to edit and requires recompression to use in iTunes or iMovie.

    • The Video Capture captures directly to MPEG-4/H.264 format, so the files are immediately ready to go into iTunes or iMovie, and can be synced to iPods, iPhones and Apple TVs with no further conversion.

    • The software for the Video Capture makes the process somewhat simpler than using the Hybrid within EyeTV.
