I was really excited about this product being that my it's really the only one out there like it. I bought it for my parents (both have iPhones 3GSs now) and thought this would be a nice and neat way to charge their phones at night (while their computer was off)—the fact that it synced was icing on the cake.
Here's what the description doesn't tell you: only the left dock syncs and only the right dock charges when the computer is off (no USB power). I don't understand why it's so hard to make a dock that charges both with the computer off and has a syncing dock too. Like I said, I'm a bit disappointed. Nice but not enough adaptors

Nice slim design, works fine. It only has one of each type of adaptor. For instance if you have two iphones that need charging then the little plastic piece at the bottom doesn't quite fit one of them. You can squeeze the second phone in but its not a great fit. If however your looking to charge a phone and an ipod nano then i'm sure it works great. …More

I was disappointed in the product because both docks do not sync, only the left one. The outside of the box never mentioned that and I thought it was broken. Only on page 8 of the User’s Guide is that mentioned. It should be clearly posted on the box that it only charges in both docks and only can sync in one dock. I am returning it ASAP. …More

I have been very pleased with this charging dock. It charges my iPhones as quickly as the charging cord, without all the wires dangling around. I like the green ready light feature. It is easy to use and correctly sized, and does not take up much space on my counter. I have not used mine connected to my computer, so I cannot comment on that aspect. I have recommended it to friends as a really nice power charging solution for multiple iPhone familes. …More

Good news - no you don't. I just got one today and you can do this without an adapter.
Essentially the dock has two slots with bits of plastic (adapters) that interchange around the power connector piece. On mine the left one is molded for the iphone (mine 3GS). The right one by default is for a new nano ipod. You can interchange the adapter by leveraging the back of it (bit difficult) I had to pressure a screwdriver inside the nano slot from the back to the front to unclip it (the plastic hinges are on the front) with the clip at the back of the adapter (no help from the manual here).
You can then put in one of 3 adapters (not sure what they all are, 1 nano, 1 classic(?), 1 2g iphone (?)) none of which are for another 3G iphone and the one for the classic doesn't fit my 160gb. However by not putting in an adapter it works/looks fine "naked" and can take a 160gb ipod or 3Gs iphone.
