    Great Sound, Strange Fit

    Written by BB from Tulsa

I couldn't figure out why the "R" and "L" indicators were upside down: they weren't, I was. Apparently you're supposed to put them in upside down and loop the wires over your ears. I saw a demo of how to do this on the Shure web site. Oddly enough, it seems to make a noticeable difference in the depth of the bass tones, but wearing the wire looped over your ear makes you look like a moron. This is what happens when engineers don't talk to users.

Also, the microphone is an extra $40 and has to be bought separately. Discussion of the microphone in the product description is very misleading.

On some level I prefer what were my v-moda headphones with their lower price, deeper bass, and integrated microphone, but like most, they failed within a few months. Just the fact that these headphones work and work well, make them a winner.

If they aren't 5-star, what IS?

Written by PW from San Diego

I owned SE210's for a year. Lost them recently and needed to replace them or try some new ones:

    I tried new headsets.

If they fit you differently, then they'll probably sound different, but I tried to place them and fit them and they is what I think:

Bose: ($99): Great, fantastic sound. Simply stellar. But the headset were just "hanging there". NO sound isolating quality at all. If you listen in a noisy environment (gym, subway, etc) they just don't cut it. I needed TONS of volume to get the job done. And if I got active???? Forget about it.

Beats by Dr Dre's ($150...I think): Nice ribbon wire. LAME sound. No where near worthy of the price. Very little sound isolation.

Apple In Ear w Remote and Mic ($79): Good enough for the average listener, average Joe, average music listener, minor sound isolation, but none-the-less....some.

Shure SE 115 ($99): Great sound isolation! Great fit! Great price! TOTALLY MISSING upper frequency sound! Tried EVERY EQ setting and these things don't have the speaker drivers that are on the other Shure models, CLEARLY! If you want to listen to voice only, these are fantastic, but music....for $99? Really?? Spring for the SE210's!

SE210's ($149 and $179MPA's): Shure has the BEST sound isolation around. No one is close! Simply brilliant compared to everything else I've put in my ears!

    Pros: Fit.
    Awesome, full range sound quality.
Lowest necessary volume needed by any.
    What else do you need?

Cons: Spendy....but you can't get better for less.
Bass might be a bit dead and choked out. Maybe not the best for R&B, etc but I'd have to say good enough for rock. I think the 310's for $249 might handle that with the bass ports and that probably makes them the PREMIER, but c'mon...$249....and I might lose THEM too? Tough pill to swallow.

Spend the cash and get the SE210's! You'll be glad you did. Spend the extra $30 if you can even CONSIDER yourself owning an IPhone in the next few years. The SE210MPA will get everything done for you!

Got more cash, go hit the SE310's, but c'mon...SE420's and SE530's....$349 & $449. Are you kidding me. I live a REAL life income, not a rock star income.

    superior build and audio quality

im hooked on Shure products and i can confidently say anything the company produces is of the highest quality in both construction and sound. price aside the SE210s are for people who really truly enjoy listening to hi-fi sound. the frequency curve for the headphones is fairly flat (not a bad thing), meaning they give a neutral but very rich sound. higher frequencies are sharp and crisp but not ear-piercingly bright and the lower frequencies are present enough to be felt but aren't overwhelming offering an extremely dynamic listening experience regardless of what kind of music you're into. some say that the bass isn't present/loud/powerful but they're most likely assuming lots of low-end bass with "high quality" sound. that is not the case, these are studio quality ear monitors that represent sound very accurately. if you want club thumping bass, go somewhere else. the SE210s are for audiophiles.

besides sound quality, Shure has built a pretty beefy set of ear buds. i wear mine in the studio and also use them while skating and snowboarding so they get plenty of use and if you are someone who really beats up on things, don't worry, Shure has an excellent no questions 2-year warranty. which i have taken advantage of at roughly the 22 month stage of owning them. i put them in the mail and Shure just replaced them, sending me a brand new pair accessories and all. you can't beat that.

    Mixed Bag

    Written by AK from Hopewell

There are so many options to fit your ears, and I have yet to find one that's quite right. The foam ones are squished and held in the ear and if they aren't held for at least a good 8 seconds, the quality of the base really suffers. It's awkward to have to go through this process, especially if walking. And if you need to hear anything in the real world, you must remove them because they do block everything. EVERYTHING. My roommates have the TV turned up with base that I can feel in my gut and the table shakes, but I hear NONE of it. This is a plus for me, but on the other hand dangerous when walking around town. The rubber ones just pop in but don't have as much base. The classic style ones that you can cut to fit are the best but still don't have as much base as the foam.

The cord is in two pieces. I guess this would be nice if you kept your iPod at breast hight, but it won't fit my iPhone at that point. I must use the extension cable. The cord is thick and sturdy, which makes it awkwardly tent sometimes.

They do seem like they're made to be upside-down in the ear. I have to lift my hair out of the way to put the cord behind my ear; otherwise, this is a comfortable way of wearing them. In general, these aren't as much of an on-the-go headphone like the Bose earbuds with the striped cord, which has become a fashion statement in college towns, but they are very nice for a desk environment where you won't be moving too much.

Every high to every low is rendered beautifully; however, if they don't fit your ear perfectly, the base is noticeably weak. I really like the way these work with music making software and games.

All together, I'm not Shure how to feel about these. I might return them and get another set of Bose (and save $).

    Awful

Equivalent to a $19 set from a drug store. Not exaggerating. Stunningly bad. I have compared them, on an IPhone-GS, a Sansa Fuse and the output jack on a wall powered stereo, to three other sets of ear-buds and two (high end) head phones. Distortion at high frequencies is actually painful and I don't mean aesthetically (but that too). Low frequency is feeble. All ear inserts they supply that seal sufficiently to allow any base at all, hurt. More
