HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax
A practical, quality solution for a home office
Written by MM from Atlanta
May 29, 2009
The printer works great w/my older flatscreen G4 iMacs & a PB on my wireless Mac network via printer sharing in OSX3.9 & OSX4.11. Built-in software works equally well via the resident computer or via the device itself. Photo and graphic quality is excellent, scanning versatile (i.e. pdf to email & other options) and simple. Holds 250 sheets, prints on both sides, doc feeder, & best of all wireless. Configuring was nearly automatic. Camera card slots included as a bonus; but no preview of pix, just file numbers. Faxing is easy, as is copying, B&W or color (ink saving option). Individual ink carts are a nice bonus- replace just the color you need. As w/any inkjet printer, it's a good idea to have a laser printer around as well to save $ on ink. This is also a particularly "green" printer. Good integrated software, Mac-friendly, pretty well made. Recommended for a home business. …More

HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax
Has Everything We Need!
Written by RB from Koloa
Jul 9, 2009
We finally decided to buy a new multifunction printer to replace our slowly dying Officejet G85, and decided on this one because we are used to HP and their inks are more widely available where we are.
This thing is awesome! The setup was somewhat slow moving, but still super easy with only a couple of clicks necessary. The first thing I did was fax some financial paperwork, including both letter and legal-size paper, and after I realized that 36 pages wouldn't fit in the auto document feeder (oops!) I split the stack into 2 and the Officejet did it easily with no problems.
I love the wireless feature, as the included USB cable barely made it from where my printer is over to the back of the computer, and now we can print seamlessly from either of our two computers without having to deal with sharing the printer from one to the other. Also, the built-in memory card slots are great when you want to print photos without having to download and process them to the computer first!
Printing is fairly quick, as is scanning, and the included software allows you to convert scans to PDF, JPEG, or even RTF editable text using an OCR program. All in all, we are very happy with this purchase.
P.S. to LM from Honolulu, when installing the printer's software, two printers are created, an Officejet 6500 and an Officejet 6500 fax. You need to make sure you are printing to the one that doesn't say "fax" in the name to print correctly. Hope that helps! …More70 of 73 people found this useful

Printer will not print using the black cartridge
Written by KK from Santa Barbara
Jul 25, 2009
I have been in touch with HP concerning this but they do not have any solution. I have set the printer to print black only, but the text comes out grey. The levels from the black cartridge remain full but the levels in the color cartridges are being used up. I hooked up the printer to a windows machine and it worked great. I even tried reinstalling the software drivers, replacing the black cartridge, and every thing else I could think of. I will be returning the printer and trying out another brand. …More

INK SUCKER
Written by BS from Bellingham
Nov 29, 2009
I have just replaced my wonderfully efficient HP 2410xi and HP2210xi printers that used HP56 and HP57 ink. I got tons of copies per cartridge.
The HP6500 Officejet wireless burns thru the 3 color cartridges very fast. I would love to have a counter because I doubt I've gotten 100 pages of internet printing (NOT PICTURES) and the 3 colors are out in less than 3 weeks. They cost $15 each so at this rate I'll be paying over $45 per month JUST FOR THE COLOR INK. The black ink still has 80% or so.
I am NOT a happy customer.
Also, I am a pretty savy Mac owner. Since 1980, and with my business' and personal Macs, I have bought about 40 Macs. BUT, it was very difficult putting this printer TOGETHER, with poor drawings. (YES, MANY PIECES) and the instructions to setting it up for wireless use is extremely difficult. Each computer on your Airport has to download from the disc and then hook each computer up seperately with USB connected directly to printer and fumble around in the blind for awhile. Frustrating.
Again, I'm not a happy customer. HP could Give this printer away and the ink would still make them plenty of money. Not many places sell the ink for this model either.
Finally, it is all plastic. Not sturdy at all I'm sure it won't last the 6 years my others did.

Great All-in-One Printer
Written by DV from Vancouver
Nov 29, 2009
Easy, straight-forward software installation. Good, solid software.
It isn't necessary to figure out which drivers to download and install (Canon comes to mind) - there's only one file for this printer.
All the printer's functionality is enabled on the Mac (unlike Epson's Artisan series where faxing will only work in Windows).
Large machine but still not too big. The printer is a good size for what it does.
Highly recommended. …More1 of 2 people found this useful

Best AIO for the price
Written by ML from Sherman
Nov 20, 2009
After doing lots of research on multifunction printers, mostly on ink consumption, I decided on the OfficeJet 6500 E709a (Networked but not wireless). It's replacing an Epson CX5000. The Epson uses T069 cartriges getting roughly 200 color pages per 4 cart set at about $55, or .28 per page. I have an HP 6500 on my work PC and it performs wonderfully under WinXP with the 920XL cartridges, nearly 650 color pages for $75, or .12 per page.
I was luck enough to be able to real world test the 6500 with my Macbook at work and couldn't find any real performance issues save one... photos are passable but not showroom quality. Everything seems on par with the WinXP output. I tested Pages, Numbers, Word, Excel, and Safari printjobs and could not see any real difference. Even The Printshop 2 printed wonderful color documents.
So I bought one for home and had it unpacked, setup, and printing in less than 40 minutes. A test scan into Photoshop Elements 8 using the HP Twain at 8 bit color is fast and extremely accurate in color and detail. Again, printing is not so good but I'm using Wal-Mart paper instead of the recommended HP photo paper. Even on the Epson, I was having color problems so it may also be my color calibration is off. …More4 of 4 people found this useful

Does automatic double-sided printing mean auto double sided copying and scanning too?
- Asked by SL from NEW YORK
- Oct 25, 2009
Best Answer
It does not. Automatic double-sided printing works because of the duplexer in the back of the machine, which allows the machine to print one side of the page, wait for the ink to dry, and then pull the page back in to print the other side.
Automatic double-sided scanning and copying does not work because the ADF (automatic document feeder) cannot read both sides of a double-sided page by itself. It can only read one side at a time, meaning the page has to flipped over and fed back in to the ADF for a double-sided scan or copy to be made.
So, double-sided copies and scans can be made, just not automatically (i.e., you have to scan each side individually, which the machine then combines to print a double-sided version).
Incidentally, I own this printer, but wish it had automatic double-sided scanning and copying. (Like the Canon PIXMA MX860 does - realized this too late.) …More- Answered by MA from SAINT LOUIS
