I bought this storage devise last fall (2008) after purchasing a new MacBook and several Apple products (Time Capsule, AppleTV, iPhone). I completely converted from PC to Apple, a move that was absolutely a great move. (I have one application that I absolutely needed that was only available for Windows so I also have Bootcamp running for Windows when I needed it).
The LaCie HD has performed fine so far. What I like about it.
1. Physical build is very good
2. Disapates heat without a fan
3. Works both directly with USB to MacBook and indirectly through the USB port in Time Capsule
4. While I have not used the Firewire port, I plan to do so when I eventually I buy a iMac when they are renewed. That capability may be important for those who have firewire capable machines.
5. On/off switch as well as a auto setting. I am not sure how well the auto setting works. In my case, I turn it off completely when I am not using the hard drive.
What might be a problem.
1. I have read other reviews (I think Apple has removed a number of reviews from this site recently which said this) that these HD can fail. HD , in general, are very prone to failure as I have found out personally (2 Western Digital HD) and by looking at reviews of numerous hard drive products. So I advise, do not depend on just one backup for anything that you absolutely cannot lose, say pics, purchased music, or important docs. Backup, backup, and then backup. I have three copies of my pics, for example. And one of these should be in another location.
Conclusion:
My experience with the HD as been positive so far, thus the 5 stars. But, of course, the important thing is how dependable the HD is in the long run. That only time can tell. Hopefully, it will earn the 5 stars.

I've had my Lacie for more than 8 months... I have a business in videography, so you know how much I have to rely on space and durability when it comes to a hard drive. Purchased the same time I got my iPhone and MacBook Pro, coming from PC to now a Lover of APPLE.
Well take my word for it, LaCie, has lived up to it all... I have stored all my video footage and pictures and of course music... I'm looking to buy 2 more, since I am running out of room soon. If your curious if this works fast for video, I can honestly say, "YES!!"
I use Firewire 800, 400, even the USB, It feels like it's been part of my MacBook, and no lost in speed, nor hang-ups, it just FAST...
MacBook Pro has a feature called "Time Machine"... LaCie 1TB d2 Quadra works great with that.
** Heat?! you ask heat? Nope, none, cool to the touch, the aluminum works wonders!
** Quiet?! If it runs, it should make a noise, right? But not this one, can't hardly hear it. The only noise I really hear is the fan under my MacBook to keep it cool, while I edit videos for hours. (I like to keep my Mac happy and cool, LOL)
** Now for my favorite feature... The "Auto" on / off switch... When I'm done for the day and would like all my equipment to rest, just like I. I "eject" my LaCie, and the "auto" feature will put the HD to sleep, AUTOMATICALLY... Which means, saving energy and creates longer life (I believe) for my LaCie. I've never seen another HD do that...
I have a Seagate too, but now it's just a paper weight. Still runs, but I just love the auto feature to much, LOL...
So over all, this is really a great buy... If you don't believe me, try it for yourself... You might be on here, sharing your own story, and soon.

My new LaCie runs very quietly indeed and performs admirably. The all-metal construction is of excellent quality and inspires a feeling of confidence in the product. The three-year warranty helps in that respect too. The large-but-mellow blue light on this drive is far preferable to me than the much brighter, more distracting lights on some competitive drives.
I've had the 500GB version of this drive for about eight months and that has given flawless service so far. So I'm expecting the same from this one. From my experience, this current generation of LaCie d2 drives (distinguishable by the corrugated heat-sink side panels), is a distinct improvement over the previous generation of d2 drives, which I was not so happy with.

To understand how worthless some reviews are here, you need look no further than one review down, by CD of Los Altos. He reviews a model that is NOT the one being sold here. He reports on a previous generation model (the 1T D2 Quadra Hard DRIVE, not theD2 Quadra Hard DISK. He talks of failure after 18 months, but the present model hasn't even been available that long. And the present model offers a three-year warranty, something CD from Los Altos clearly didn't get with his older drive. The stuff he writes about two platters is irrelevant to the newer model too. So it's important to read such reviews with caution. Some reviewers seem happy to mislead.
My own experience of the 1T (the one actually being sold currently), distinguished visually by the corrugated side-panels) is very positive. Exceptionally sturdy and quiet, easy to set up and speedy, I've had no problems at all. This is a difficult question to answer, why, well I have this drive and it started to play up, kept dismounting from my iMac.
A bit of investigation resulted in finding out that LaCie have had problems with power supplies. Mine started playing up when the drive was 14 months old. As LaCie offer a 3 year limited warranty I was none to hopeful, but fired off an email to their support desk.
Bottom line, I was asked to send back my old power supply and a replacement turned up, gratis, 2 weeks later. My drive now works perfectly.
So it would seem that some of the failures and negative comments here may not be as a result of a bad drive but a failing power supply. …More- Answered by PB from Milton Keynes

Does this Hard drive have 2x500gb platters inside or just 1x1tb? if its two can it mirror the backup data on both 500gb platters for extra safety?

As MM replied, it does have only one disk. You could divide the disk into two 500 GB partitions, by using either the software already on your Mac, or software included with the drive from LaCie. That would give you the opportunity to have a double back-up of your data, but would not afford you the added security of having those back-ups on two volumes, or two drives. …More

The blue light in front (not annoyingly bright) is the LaCie Shortcut Button. It launches any application you program it to. Most use it to launch Time Machine backup or LaCie's back up software that is included: Genie Backup Assistant software with data restore for Windows or Intego Backup Assistant software with data restore for Mac.
As for the power; LaCie has an On, Off, Auto switch in the back to set how you'd like to have your drive powered.
On- drive is always on.
Auto- hibernates when your computer does
Off- always off. You could use this if you were going on vacation and didn't need it on. …More- Answered by AS
