Great Deal for Canon Pixma MX860 Series Printer

    Written by RS from Skillman

    Apr 23, 2009

I would give this All-in-One Printer 5 stars, were it not for the required software installation to use the wireless networking features and for the manual printer cartridge alignment process. The user must interpret the alignment page and enter data using the All-in-One Printer controls and display screen (not a touch screen). Preferably, I would like to place the alignment page in the built-in scanner and let the All-in-One printer analyze, interpret and self-align. Now do not let this discourage you from buying this product. The manual alignment process is not difficult, it is inconvenient for the user but it is not often necessary. Otherwise, every other feature is great and works well, I especially like the ability to print on both sides of the paper (duplex printing) and the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF Simplex & ADF Duplex). One downside to printing and scanning wirelessly is the length of time it takes. Scanning a document or a photograph takes more then a minute or two but it is worth not having to connect the printer with a USB cable. I haven't printed a picture but I trust the quality is what you would expect from Canon and as far as the fax ability, I haven't tested that either.

    Summary:
    Looks Great
    Functions Great
    Good Value

    Pros:
    Inexpensive
    Wireless Enabled
    Duplex Printing
    ADF (Simplex & Duplex)
Color Scheme matches that of Apple Computers
Replacement Ink is about $15 per cartridge

    Cons:
Unpacking & Installation with alignment takes ~ 1 hour
    Manual cartridge alignment
Software is required for wireless & network use
Software is a bit confusing and simplistic

I would buy an additional one if needed

    Seems pretty good except for...

    Written by JP from Hillsboro

    May 14, 2009

Got this printer last week. So far I'm really liking it. The only complaints I have would be 1). The print head alignment process and 2), the installation of the print head and ink cartridges.

It is true what the previous reviewer said about the print head alignment process being tedious. It's also a bit of a paper and ink waster. Other than that though, it's fine. Just be sure to set aside about ten or 15 minutes to do it.

The installation of the print head and ink cartridges is kind of difficult 1). because the area where those things need to go is dark and hard to see and 2) the directions and pictures describing the process in the manual aren't very clear. After futzing with things for a while, I realized that each ink cartridge goes in at a bit of an angle, then easily slides back under a little lip that is created after the print head is installed. Then, after each cartridge is pushed down, it clicks into place. When the red light for each cartridge comes on, you know you've got it. You shouldn't have to apply any pressure at all. Everything should just slide and click right into place.

Other than the above issues, I've found this printer to be very good. It's pretty fast, and has good true to the original print quality.

Can't fax from my desktop, oh well.

Written by BH from Berkeley Springs

    Jun 2, 2009

I bought this printer mostly so i could print from my networked laptop running windows vista as well as from my Mac, but also because my previous canon didn't have a driver that allowed me to fax from my Mac's desktop. I had to print my fax, then put scan/fax the hard copy from the printer! Kind of defeated the purpose, eh? So when I read the glowing report in the Apple store that mentioned all the fax capabilities, I thought, oh, it must have that capability. I should've called Canon to check before I bought -- I called to verify that there was no driver after I installed it, and my suspicions were confirmed. BOO!

I installed the printer both to the Mac (running Leopard) and the laptop with little trouble. The only catch I found was the absence of the "Printer browser window" and then the "Scanner Selector" dialog. I found both of them in the preferences section for each and was able to select the networked printer to complete the installation.

I guess my work-around will be to fax from the laptop since I can share all my files back and forth. Seems ridiculous.

Four Hours into this Beast and I Don't like it

    Written by ED from Chantilly

    Nov 27, 2009

It arrives like a bad frat joke with an hour required to unpack, un-tape and free the beast. Then you learn you will give up more desk real estate than you planned. You will spend about 90 minutes going blind attempting to align the 27 print head settings). Drivers are not compatible (throw the CD out), The first color print was "under-whelming." Prints verrrrrrrrry slloooowly. Probably an OK back-up printer but a poor paper weight as the tray holds about 11 sheets of paper. More

    Not so great

Written by PB from Palo Alto

    Nov 25, 2009

I've spent a couple of weeks with this printer, and I'm about to return it. It surprises me that other people find the software or hardware acceptable.

I purchased the printer, only because HP refused to provide a new driver for my previously working just fine 3100 when I upgraded my machines to snow-leopard. Hence my desire to avoid HP in future. All I wanted was a duplex printer that worked as well as and was as fast as the previous HP 3100 (which cost me $69 four years ago).

This (Cannon MX860) printer has been a disaster, I paid three times as much for it, for about 1/2 the speed, and it has cost me about 10 times as much time and effort to get it working.

    - It spends a lot of time "processing .. processing .. processing", according to the front LCD panel. i.e. 2,3,4 minutes sometimes before a page comes out. (Other times it comes out in 20-30 seconds but there is no pattern - all I'm printing is regular pdf's, pages documents and spreadsheets).

    - It uses about five times as much ink as my previous HP. One reason might be that the ink cartridges are tiny. Even if you don't care about the cost of the ink, the attention cost of changing ink cartridges once or twice a day (yes, a day), is just intolerlable, compared to my previous HP, which I changed once every two weeks or so, even doing the same amount of printing.

    - The software is funky. Despite all the hoopla about snow-leopard being so much better on printer drivers, and a specific recommendation by Apple that this was one of the most "compatible" printers with SL, had to manually download the software from their site, delete the old drivers and still manually tell the printer software on the mac what its IP address it was at.

    - The scanner software is a joke. After a lot of futzing around getting the printer working on the network, I had to move it back to a USB connection in order to get the scanner going. Double clicking on the scanner icon didn't do anything except say no scanner connected, so I had to manually set it up to scan a document from the front panel keypad (which worked, but was again slow). To top it all, the printer wouldn't work after I used the scanner, until I moved it back to the Ethernet /IP connection.

    - Poor integration with bonjour. While the scanner shows up as a bonjour device, the printer doesn't. You have to manually download a special piece of software on every machine you use. There is also a startup program it installs in your startup folder called "cannon helper" or something, which I have never seen needed by any other printer.

Doesn't support snow leopard out of the box

    Written by JS from belmont

    Nov 23, 2009

I bought this printer at the Apple store, where I asked the rep whether it had good Mac support. He said - of course! Everything we sell here works great with the Mac. I spent an hour plus tonight on this thing, only to find after all the unpacking and setup that the install disk does not recognize Mac OS 10.6 and won't install drivers. The drivers that come with 10.6 won't let you use this printer as a network printer. The Canon website has drivers, but no instructions for making the whole thing work. So I'm screwed. Back to the store for a refund tomorrow (and very ticked off) unless they have some very good and quick answers. I think it's unforgiveable that Apple sells this product without mentioning the lack of 10.6 support. More

Yes it does work wirelessly with Snow Leopard. However, the start-up disk that came with the printer did not support printer installation with Snow Leopard. Just got off the phone with Canon tech support and he ran me through the whole installation; download drivers/software, and set me up for wireless operation of the printer. Very helpful folks at Canon. More

Yes. I just purchased this printer and this is how I have it set up right now. I want to go wireless, but haven't had the time to have a canon rep run me through the process. The manual is not clear for wireless set up. More
