Griffin RoadTrip with SmartScan for iPhone and iPod
Not so great
Written by SB from Oakton
Nov 27, 2008
I have a 06 Honda Odyssey and on a trip to Boston from DC and in the DC area, I did not ever have great performance without significant static, often rendering the audio non-listenable with my iPhone 3G. I was glad Griffin started shipping this first fm transmitter with a fixed mount last week but unfortunately my experience was not as good as the first reviewer.
The Good: the style and mount is excellent; the cig adapter is an extremely snug fit which is fantastic. Buttons work well and menu usage is intuitive except with use of non iTunes content (more on that below). The LED multicolor ring on the cig adapter changes color to signify different charging status of the iPhone or iPod....cool.
The Bad: Like most fm transmitters, the signal is poor and probably suffers even more depending on the distance to your antenna for your car and the "competition" in fm frequencies in your area. In the DC, NY and Boston areas, I had to run through the "smartscan" procedure multiple times to find a station that is barely passable.
Secondly, you can not even manually tune to 87.9 even if your car radio does pick up this channel. The roadtrip starts the frequency spectrum at 88.1..not sure if there is a workaround for that as I heard exists on some other fm transmitters.
Thirdly, if you use streaming audio such as aol, pandora or even live streaming podcasts via iTunes Store (can now stream podcasts within iTunes Store as a result of 2.2 iPhone update), accidentally hitting the dedicated pause/play or forward next buttons on the road trip don't do what you expect to pause/forward the content but immediately cause you to leave the podcast/iTunesStore app and go into iTunes itself. You then have to go back to the streaming audio app and attempt to find your place back in the middle of the podcast or whatever.....not easy to do when driving. The key is to use the iPhone or iPod for all audio control if using streaming audio other than content within the iPod app on your iPhone.
I wish it worked better, I honestly do...but hard to justify the cost for something that works so inconsistently. The smartscan is a nice option but afraid in my situation, it still does not work very well. …More221 of 260 people found this useful

RoadTrip for 3G - Excellent
Written by MS from Heathrow

I'm very happy with the Griffin RoadTrip! I purchased this to use with my iPhone 3G, and have had a very good experience with it. Griffin has isolated the problem that the earlier model had with intermodulation between the FM and cell/3G bands, so there is no buzzing, clicking or popping when I use the FM transmitter. I've received calls and used the 3G connection while using the FM portion of the device, and the FM signal continued with a solid connection. I highly suggest this if you're looking for an iPhone 3G car cradle solution. …More

I love this product when it works right. It worked beautifully for three months, then all I got was static, no matter what station I tried. I contacted Griffen tech support and requested a new one, which they provided. It works beautifully once again. I just hope it lasts longer this time. …More

Too much static
Written by DS from sugar land

I was very excited to buy the Roadtrip 2 days ago for my iPhone 3G and '04 Tahoe. For the price tag I expected a far more superior FM transmitter to the cheaper ones that I have used but the constant static that I experience leaves me feeling very disappointed. The Roadtrip does provide a good pedistal and charger combo but that isn't why I purchased the Roadtrip. …More
