Good question! It is not that it won't run, you just won't get the rated 9 minutes of power during an outage, maybe more like 7... In my experience when a power outage occurs, either the power comes back on in a brief minute or two, or if not, you tire of hearing your UPS chirping its warning sound and have a chance to safely shut down your computer well before the battery backup is drained. My APC UPS came with Powerchute software on a disk. Connecting the USB cable from the UPS to the Mac and installing the Powerchute software, Powerchute will be available in the System Preferences, allows the computer to shut down automatically when the power fails. If the power comes back on before the shutdown occurs, it is as if nothing happened, the Mac stays on. Be sure to save changes to your files before leaving the building; it is probably better if no dialog boxes pop up during shutdown and you know the saved version has all your creativity preserved. …More
