    Total failure

    Written by RT from Doral

    Nov 25, 2008

I am sorry to say that, but this armband is a failure. I've been a VERY loyal user of Nike armbands since Nano 2nd gen. I had always loved the "no loop" design with a smooth, elastic material that will both fit nicely and not strangulate your arm. I didn't think twice before getting the Nike armband along with my new Nano. When I opened the box and saw the plastic loop I was a little bit skeptical, but what the heck, it is the Nike armband, it couldn't be that bad!

Unfortunately, it is THAT bad. Main reasons are:

1 - The plastic loop. It will invariably pinch your arm when you try to adjust the armband. Not nice.

2 - The fabric is not elastic or at least not as elastic as on previous designs. This translates into a stiff armband strangulating your arm. Not a good idea to block your arm's blood flow when doing physical activities.

3 - Nike + iPod receiver - It doesn't have a place for the receiver. The bottom part of the receiver will stay in contact with your skin. And it kind of has sharp edges and will annoy you during a long run. I got a slight bruise from the friction on my last long-ish run of around 15km.

4 - Hard to remove from the armband - It is hard to remove the Nano from the armband. You have to squeeze it on the top part of the pouch, i.e., on the translucent plastic part. This will dent the plastic and may scratch your new Nano's screen.

5 - Hard to plug headphones when the Nano is inserted. Although there is no special space for the Nike receiver, the pouch is a little deeper than the Nano's height. Then it becomes kind of hard to plug headphones to the unit when it is already inserted.

Sorry Nike, this armband is a failure. Please come up with a replacement similar to the successful previous designs.

    Complete Failure

    Written by JC from Toronto

    Nov 8, 2008

I purchased this product from a Nike store in Canada. When I went to buy it, not only did it take them 15 minutes to figure out what it was, but they tried to over charge me!

The next morning, when I went to go for a run, I tried to put the nano in, and get going. Even without the receiver, I worked up a sweat trying to get the nano inside the armband. I realized that it needed to be stretched out for it to fit, so this problem should go away over time.

And while the material has a great feel, the stretching capacity of the band is less then impressive. I am 15 years old, and i go to the gym about 90 minutes a week, mostly focussing on my legs for hockey. I by no means have large arms, but I am at the edge of the band on my biceps, but too loose on my forearm.

I have had numerous problems with my Nike+, which I was initially very excited over, and Nike has been absolutely awful throughout this whole process. I wish that Apple would step in, and have Nike conform to THEIR code of conduct when it comes to dealing with the consumer. Apple was great and very helpful. Nike, you can learn from Apple a great deal.

    Good but too small...

    Written by BE from Cordova

    Nov 17, 2008

Conceptually I really like this armband. Nike also fixed the problem I had with the 3g armband letting sweat get inside the case, so from a technical perspective they are 50% better than the 3g armband. (Actually they fixed the sweating issue on the 3g armband too but didn't tell anyone.)

One great feature of this armband that's tough to find on others, is the tight fit of the plastic window and the raised menu button. It makes it so much easier to find the dial and because it fits so tight it makes it very easy to change volume. It also makes it less likely you'll accidently change the volume when trying to press the menu button to check your progress.

However, where they missed big is on the size of the armband, and the reason I can only give this product 4 stars. I have what I consider "normal" size arms for someone 5'11" and not overweight. I can barely get it on. It's very uncomfortable right now, one more inch and I'd be fine. This case is nowhere as flexible as the 3g case, but I'm hoping that it will change over time.

Not the best in ergonomic design but still usable

    Written by EH

i bought this prodcut despite all the negative reviews as i was eager to try out the Nike+ipod workout companion.

and yes, i've discovered that whatever i've been reading was true, but for those who've already bought this product, there are a few adjustments that you can make to still use this armband in comfort

    1. armband is too tight and plastic handle cuts into skin
    >>> put a small towel over your arm first, then wear the armband. the towel will serve to keep the armband in place without having to tighten it too much and you wont feel the handle cutting into your skin. this is especially important since your muscles expand and contract as you move your arm about. the towel will help with the grip

    2. armband uses the tightness of the wrap to keep the ipod in place
    >>> wear the armband upside down; this makes more sense as you can read the display with greater ease when you look down your arm. lift your arm slightly and you can toggle the controls. no more worries about the ipod slipping out

    3. ipod has to be "squeezed" to fit into the armband slot
    >>> it does take a bit of strength, but its not impossible to fit it through. leave the ipod in the armband for a day or two and the material would've expanded enough to allow you to slot the ipod in and out more easily

    4. "hold" button cannot be reached
    >>> this is the most annoying design loophole. put the ipod in, estimate the position of the hold button and cut a small slot in the material. you wont need the device to be on "hold" during your run. i don't place mine on "hold" when i run and no accidental triggering or any buttons. besides, sometimes i skip through songs depending on my mood so there is even less need for "holding" it

these are my humble opinions, hope it helps those out there who are close to the verge of throwing this thing out of the window :)

    cheers!

    Consider a Different Armband

Written by JW from Mountain View

I purchased this armband to run with my new nano and was left sadly disappointed. Once I managed to get my nano inside the sleeve, it was extremely difficult to remove it and accessing the features of the nano (front dial and top lock) was not easy during my run. Also, if you have wireless headphones, the plug does not fit easily easily into the bottom of the ipod while in the sleeve. On a positive note, the comfort was good for runs of about 1 hour and my ipod did stay dry - but I am still in search of a better armband. More

    does NOT protect iPod

    Written by CS from CHANTILLY

I have been using my Nike armband since last December and until now have had no problems with it. But while at the gym, my iPod fell out of the Nike armband landing in water and now I cannot get my iPod replaced. I would have liked to know that my iPod was not secure in this armband before purchasing this product because now instead of being out $30 for an armband I'm out $200 for an iPod. More

  • is this suitable for nano generation 5?

With the 4th and 5th generation nano there is no need for a receiver for the Nike+ as there is already one built into the system. For previous generation iPods that do not have the receiver built in the Nike store offers bands that will accommodate the use of an external receiver. Check out the selection at a local Nike store or online at the Nike site. I have one for the 3rd generation nano that I found to work just fine for me while also keeping in place the external receiver for my Nike+ kit. More
