VMware Fusion 2
BUY! BUY! BUY!
Written by TH from WEST ORANGE

I'm writing this for one reason, This software is "The ONLY way to go" if you want to run Windows on a MAC. I wish someone had warned me before I bought Parallels. I didn't initially buy VM because there were so few reviews. After one month of trying everything to get Parallels to work properly, I scrapped it, and bought VM Fusion 2.0. Within two minutes of installation I knew I made the right choice. Everything works perfectly, and FAST. Don't make the mistake I made, buy this first, at $79.99 it is a steal! …More

VMware Fusion 2
Simply excellent
Written by FS from Brooklyn

I love Vmware fusion. I got it a while ago, and at that point, I was wondering whether I wanted to partition my hard drive for Boot Camp. I tried this product out, and I loved it.
It works fabulously, and the unity feature is excellent. Also, there is a way how to make it so the desktop on Windows or whatever other OIS you use matches the one on your Mac.
I highly recommend it. …More409 of 450 people found this useful

VMware Fusion 2
Outstanding
Written by SC from Wheat Ridge

This is a very impressive bit of software.
I actually received version 1.1.2 along with the order of a newly purchased Mac Mini. Upon installing I was then directed to a free upgrade to v2.0. Downloaded and installed it, and then was treated to the unexpected delight of being able to import an existing W2K virtual machine from Virtual PC 7 off of the G5 tower I am banishing to the basement for the crime of excessive fan noise.
Not only does the imported W2K system work flawlessly, but it also runs much faster than it did before because VMWare allows one to allocate 1GB memory to the virtual machine (vs only 512M allowed by VPC7). From start to finish the whole process took less than an hour, and I was spared the irritation of a miserable afternoon building and configuring a new Windows installation. Hats-off to the engineers at VMWare for a job well done! …More391 of 427 people found this useful

I've used both Parallels 4.0 and VMware 2.0, here's what I think
Written by BR from Montville
Oct 8, 2009
I had just written a review praising Parallels 4.0 to the heavens, and thought I'd give VMWare a try. Here's what I found.
Both are absolutely excellent products and are really much more similar than they are different. I am hard pressed to find a single real golden reason to choose one over the other.
If you do a google search, you will find several reviews containing multi-colored graphs that demonstrate how Paralleles is faster at most tasks. Although I certainly did not do any scientific testing myself, I can tell you that I found the opposite. At the basic level both products ran my Windows programs just fine. However what I did notice what that VMware seems to start up, shut down, suspend, and resume Windows significantly faster. It also seems to have less "hang ups". If you are familiar with virtualization software, you are probably already familiar with your guest OS suddenly freezing for about 20 seconds or so before catching up, particularly when you launch or shut down large apps (either Mac or Windows apps.) Again, I did no scientific testing but I feel that VMWare does this MUCH less than Parallels.
The next big item is "unity" or "coherence" mode. This is where your Windows apps appear seamlessly along side your Mac apps. Both Parallels and VMware offer this, and both work more or less the same. I'd have to say that Parallels coherence mode works just a notch better than VMWare's unity mode. It's very subtle, but Parallels windows seem to move around, resize, and minimize/restore just a little bit smoother. Also, Parallels plops the Windows "start" menu in your dock whereas VMWare does not. VMWare instead has a "applications" menu item in your menu bar that a) in my opinion is not nearly as nice and b) does not appear unless vmware is in the foreground so I constantly find myself command-tabbing to even find it.
So overall I'd say VMware 2 is better for performance, and Parallels 4 is slightly better for your "seemless" experience. Note that VMware 3 is being released soon - and that does seem to revamp "unity" mode and they also made a much nicer app launcher which just might slide all the scales in vmware's favor.
Also, VMware offers a free 30 day trial. So there's little reason to go try it out right now! …More71 of 73 people found this useful

VMware Fusion 2
Very Good Product!
Written by DD from Fort Lauderdale

This is a good one to have if you want to use pc programs on your mac. I rated it 4 stars because it is a little slow when switching to and from the virtual machine. It is not as smooth as it says it is, at least in my macbook pro (2Gb RAM). It has a user friendly interface and it is very easy to use. I would recommend this product to people that have 4Gb RAM or more. …More

I have today received an email direct from VMWare in answer to this exact question, the content of which is here :-
Customers who purchase Fusion 2.0 from a local retailer are very much eligible for a free upgrade to Fusion 3.0, but you will need to register the Fusion 2.0 serial number on your account on Vmware.com
Hope this clarifies this for you. …More- Answered by CS from BIRMINGHAM
