Use only if you want to test Time Machine Back Up
Written by JK from ROCKWALL

Thank goodness for Time Machine backup and restore option. I had the Tech Tool 4 with the free upgrade to Tech Tool 5 (this version) when it became avaialable. I just got the new version of Tech Tool Pro 5 (5.0.2) on DVD in the mail yesterday after waiting over a year for this release. As per the instructions, it states that you have 30 days to test booting up with the Tech Tool Pro 5 DVD to make sure it works and to contact Tech Support if having any problems.
Well, never mind reporting it does not work as I will never again use their product. My iMac booted up OK using the DVD but when trying to restart back to the Mac OS after finishing the boot DVD, that is when my iMac completely locked up. Then it would not boot up at all. It would start, get the spinning beach ball then just shut down. I then booted up using my Leopard installation disk and tried to do a disk repair but it reported the file system was corrupted and could not repair. Bottom line, I was able to get my system back up by performing a restore option from my Time Machine using the Leopard install disk Time Machine Restoral options. Fortunately I had run a Time Machine backup on my system before testing the boot up from DVD on Techtool Pro5. This saved me any lost work. The restore process took about 3 hours in case you are wondering. Make certain you have a good working backup of your hard drive before even attempting to test booting from the Techtool 5 Pro DVD. Hope others have better luck with it than I did. Too bad I can't give a lower rating than just one star, it does not deserve even that. …More109 of 128 people found this useful

Why Bother?
Written by CL from WENATCHEE
Mar 25, 2009
Call me obsessive, but I have owned many Mac utilities since System 6 in the '80's, including every Norton Utilities for Mac along the way. When Symantec bailed out on Mac users and TechTool Pro took over, I appreciated the extensive hardware diagnostics and the customizable tests and suites.
INITIAL RELEASE FLAWED
After such a long wait, you would hope the first release of version 5 was well tested, but alas... My disk came with ver. 5.0.2, which failed to recognize my Mac Pros internal RAID striped drives created with Apple's Disk Utility. Through MicroMat's support forum I received ver. 5.0.3, along with the instruction to repair disk permissions before installing. The new control panel protection features will not stop running even when switched off causing unwanted alerts to keep popping up. The company told me four weeks ago me they are working on the problem The Check for Updates feature only gives me Update Error! telling me to check later. My Firewire ports have been problematic since the outset; 4.6.1 recognized a problem and sometimes even prevented testing them as if they werent there; 5.0.3 disallows independent testing, and the new startup Firewire test repeatedly shows all clear, which it is not.
ONE STEP FORWARD, TWO STEPS BACK
Some protection features have been moved to a new Control Panel, but why? Test suites have been reshuffled, but the new groupings are actually less convenient because fewer hardware tests can be run independently. The only new functionality I see duplicates Disk Utilitys Journaling and Disk Permission options.
I have a hard time calling the changes I see in ver. 5 improvements. In hindsight, I wish I had stayed with 4.6.1. …More90 of 101 people found this useful

Like at least one other reviewer here, I purchased the upgrade; using the disk is a very efficient way of making your Mac system completely useless. contacting tech support has been a less than satisfactory experience. Please do not use this product- you will regret it. …More

This Product Is Excellent
Written by PB from Freeport

My iMac was beginning to experience issues with regards to opening programs and operating speed. I had MacTuneup but it was incompatible with the latest version of Snow Leopard. I ordered this program, installed it according to directions and it is AWESOME. I installed it on my iMac (3 years old) and my Macbook Pro (18 months old) and both of them are working as if they are brand new. If the directions are followed for installation (read before installing,) this product will work like a dream and in some instances, drive itself. I highly recommend it!!!! …More

TechTool Deluxe
Written by GE from Kingston upon Thames

i have installed TechTool Deluxe (Version 3.1.3). the volume structure test gives error during scanning and it says it failed. however the report of this test indicates it passed. disk utility found no error on HD. so i am a bit confused a bit. there are hundreds of utility software in the market and i don't know why apple inc. does not recommend any utility software after testing them. moreover, why does not apple inc. produce this sort of applications such as cloning the HD, defragging and application uninstaller.... …More

This version has been nothing but a headache for me
Written by DN from Fairfax

I have used Techtool Pro for years, buying every upgrade, because it's the advanced version of Techtool Deluxe, which came with the Apple Care Protection Plan. But this latest version of Techtool is just not any good. I've had more headaches running it for maintenance than just not using it altogether. 5.06 is supposed to be compatible and meant for Snow Leopard but I've had only problems using the software. …More
