    Great for Research

After reading reviews for this product I decided to splurge and purchase it at the Apple store. I did ask the staff there if they have heard anything about it, which they didn't. They did pull up the reviews on here though which did not look promising, the common complaint was the placement of the finger during a swipe. I got it home and well it took all of 5 minutes to get it set up. I do not understand how anyone has had problems with this scanner. Every user is allowed to scan all 10 fingers and it has you scan each finger 3 times. Every scan was perfect for me with a couple deliberate mess ups to check sensitivity. This product is solid. In addition this product will be working with 1password to allow for true logging into websites and all other password than just logging into OS X. I've very very stoked for this integration of 1password and the Upek finger scanners. This product also allows for fast switching of multiple users who are allowed to use your computer. What is also very nice is if you do need different levels of protection you can choose password, Scanner, or both (for the truly paranoid). The only thing I don't like is that on a MacBook it does make things a little difficult to use the second USB drive. More

    My Eikon-to-Go has Got-to-Go

    Written by RC from Matthews

    Dec 9, 2008

I have tried to get this device to work, but I'm afraid it's going back to the apple store. I wish I would have read these reviews prior to purchasing.

Here's the deal: The fingerprint recognition software is spot-on. The equipment is well built. Problem is, it's useless is for all of those web-based username/passwords.

If I'm wrong here, then they need to do a much better job with the installation. I will be returning this one. Don't have the time. I'm surprised Apple is hawking this device at its stores.

I really wanted this device for security in public areas from snoops. Won't work....still have to enter passwords on webpages. Seems to only work on keychain passwords....not worth it. So, Eikon has Got-to-Go.

Does not work with Snow Leopard!

    Written by RC from Leeds

The first thing you'll discover while trying to set this device up is that the supplied software crashes midway through the install on Snow Leopard. Visit the manufacturer's website and you'll find that you have to make do with a "beta" (i.e. experimental) version of their software, that only lets you login with the fingerprint reader - there's no Keychain support and still none of the features Windows users have (like encrypting files).

Worse, even the one single feature offered by the demo doesn't work properly. As long as your fingerprint reader is plugged in, you're relatively safe but if you leave it out, you can't log in with your username and password - EVEN IF YOU HAVE ENABLED THIS FEATURE IN THE SETTINGS! That's right - you can see your username and an empty password box, but try to click on it and you'll have no success. So that leaves you unable to log into your computer unless you boot into single user mode and remove the software.

    An utter waste of money.

Great Products: It would be nice if they were built into Apple hardware.

    Written by PB from Kearns

    Jun 14, 2009

I own both the UPEK Eikon Digital Privacy Manager and the UPEK Eikon to Go. They are great products that make my computing quicker, easier, and less frustrating. In fact, I like UPEK's fingerprint readers so much that I wish Apple and UPEK would band together to build them directly into the next generation of MacBooks, MacBook Pros and (for desktop users) Apple keyboards. That way, Mac users would get the benefits of a biometric fingerprint reader without the loss of a USB port. It would also be cool to build them into iPods and iPhones.

The UPEK readers are almost perfect. It takes a little practice to learn the swiping technique. Nevertheless, it's more secure then using finger-press types of readers, and it definitely beats typing passwords.

Some reviewers complain about the UPEK Protector Suite software's current lack of support for web-based passwords and logins. This isn't a problem for me because I use 1Password to log in to secure web sites. Would be nice if UPEK updated their software to handle more on the Mac than user authentication? Yes. But until then, 1Password easily manages everything that the Eikon fingerprint readers don't.

As another reviewer hinted, it would be helpful if Agile Web Solutions (the makers of 1Password) updated the program to allow Eikon users to unlock 1Password with the swipe of a finger. Yet even now, the two systems complement each other well.

I've raved so loudly in this review that I'm sure someone suspects I was paid for it. Not so. I have no connection (financial or otherwise) with UPEK, Apple, Agile Web Solutions, or anyone else with any interest in promoting sales of the Eikon fingerprint readers or seeing them built into Apple hardware. I just like them so much that I wish they were.
