I have unfortunately owned too many external drives, both because I'm clumsy and perhaps a bit unlucky. So, after a friend dropped my last LaCie drive and I lost 32 gigs of music, I decided to get smart and find a drive that would handle some abuse. I'm no expert and can't attest to how much this drive can take, but I've taken it on the road a lot with no problems.

The only negative is the absence of any sort of light to let you know it's operating, but even a slow-witted guy like me can tell by touch.

I just think it's a solid piece of hardware . . . one less thing to worry about.

    Great large and durable drive

This is a great buy for anyone looking for a high capacity (500 gig), durable drive. I have had mine for over a month now and love that I can use it on the go as a reliable back up and to share pictures and large videos with friends and family. More

    The name tells all

This hard drive is excellent for people on the go and students. The aluminum case is hard to dent and the rubber outside protects his hard drive from damaging. The one set back is the price. But for a student or if you like to take your hard drive with you, this product is worth investing your money in. More

    High failure rate

    Written by WH from Mesa

    Nov 30, 2009

This is my fourth LeCie drive to become inoperable several months after purchase. Like the other drives I purchased, it suddenly disappeared from my desktop and all attempts to revive it have failed. I was galactically stupid to buy a newer model after three prior failures. My experience has been that LaCie external drives appear to have an exceptionally high failure rate. If you search the Internet, you will find many others who have had this exact same experience. I would be cautious about placing anything important on a LaCie product. After this experience, I will never buy another LaCie drive. More

    Outstanding product

I have used my LaCie 220 GB drive since 2007 with absolutely no problems. I am buying a 500 GB only because I need the room. This is a thoughtfully designed unit and the 800 Firewire is a boon. No more overnight Time Machine backups. More
