An excellent chess instruction and training software series

For several years now, I have owed Fritz & Chesster parts 1 and 2 and have thoroughly enjoyed the detail and imagination used to present the basics of chess. As a chess coach in schools for the last 15 years or so, I was curious about the last title in the series: chess is for winners however I've had difficulty locating it so I purchased the Chess Complete version. I was not disappointed and unlike another reviewer I did not have any trouble at all installing and running the software. (on OS X 10.5.7) I think this is one of the best commercial products available to MAC users on the market if you are a beginner, want to introduce your kids to chess or even if you are headed towards the intermediate level of playing this great game. We ordered this complete set because the ad said it worked with Leopard. The set contains v.1,2,and 3. The first two disks worked fine, but the v.3, Winning Chess does not load. The company does not have a phone no. listed, only email, and so far they have not responded.

Stunningly Good- Teaches the Core Drills in a Fun Manner

    Written by NV from Toronto

My seven year old is totally engrossed in this. It's a great learning tool because they are playing games that have more meaning in the story to learn certain basics. The toilet smashing bishop training was pretty hysterical. My son freaked out when he tied Grandpa White for the lead.

Chess is about practicing patterns and these patterns don't emerge much in games when kids play. I taught my son to play, but he doesn't want to do drills to learn pawn combat or mating patterns. With a game like this, they get to focus on core chess patterns, as well as feel victorious when doing these drills.

As an interesting fact regarding chess patterns and repetition - in memory studies, Grandmasters who are famous for recalling chess board layouts from past games did only marginally better then the general population when asked to memorize RANDOM arrangements of chess pieces on the board. It's all in the patterns.

The animation and characters are great. The voice acting great. Love it.

I reinstalled a fresh version of Tiger on my Cube 400MHz G4 for a kids machine, and this runs great. Tried it on Leopard on my laptop, and it runs great there as well.

By the way- this is a fantastic deal. On Amazon, you only get the first game for this price, with the other 2 not being available for the Mac. All 3 will run you $90 for Windows (only the first 1 is available for the Mac). I ordered from the online Canadian version of the Apple store and received it in 2 days.
