Tandberg LTO-4 T40+ Tape StorageLibrary Fibre Channel, 32TB Native Capacity

Tandberg LTO-4 T40+ Tape StorageLibrary Fibre Channel, 32TB Native Capacity

Product Information

  • Overview

The Tandberg T40+ Fibre Channel StorageLibrary combines affordable, world-class automation with high capacity (40 data slots) and high performance (LTO technology)--all in a space-saving 4U form factor. The new T40+ incorporates Tandberg Data's new Pass-Thru feature allowing additional units (T40 or T80) to be stacked together when your storage needs grow.

The Tandberg StorageLibrary T40+ base unit is available with 40 slots and 1 LTO 4 Native Fibre Channel 4Gb ADI interface drive. A second drive can be added as your requirements grow. With the 4Gb Fibre Automation Drive Interface (ADI) only one LC fibre optical cable is needed per drive to control both drive and library. No more expensive fiber ports needed to control the library functions.

The Capacity on Demand (COD) feature allows you to increase the number of slots from 40 to 188 and storage capacity from 32TB to 150TB/300TB* capacity. The Performance on Demand (POD) feature allows you to install up to 10 full-height LTO drives in a stacked configuration.

The highly advanced redundant power supply feature detects power fluctuations and fan failures, preventing possible damage to the unit. The redundant power supply evenly distributes the power load across two power supplies, removing the single point of failure.

For ease of management, the Web Browser remote management interface allows users to monitor, control, configure, and diagnose the StorageLibrary from anywhere in the world.

The T40+ StorageLibrary is ideally suited for budget-conscious midrange applications experiencing rapid data growth and decreased backup windows.

    Native/compressed (assumes 2:1).

Ratings & Reviews

  • Good, but not quite 100% solid

    4.0 out of 5 stars

We have had our T40+ for about 4.5 months, and it has performed well, with three exceptions. First, it got shipped with the wrong drive - the library box said it had a FC tape drive, but the drive was actually a SCSI drive. Tandberg took a few days to swap, and all was well. Second, the rack rails are not fully adjustable. Certain rack depths will not work - and even where it does, it's still not quite right. I called and complained, and received two different types of rails by mail within two days, both of which worked perfectly. Finally, however, I have had occasional issues with the robotics since the beginning. Randomly the loader will either not eject the magazines properly (I have to reach in and inset a tape the rest of the way into the magazine), or the robotics will just stop working and the whole tape library will require a restart. Updated firmware seems to have helped, but it's still not perfect - given that, I'm happy to have it.

  • Worst rail design EVER.

    1.0 out of 5 stars

Like many others, the rack mounting kit included with the T40+ uses screws through a fixed hole on one rail and the slot in anothe r to make the length of the combined rails adjustable.

But, unlike every rail I've ever encountered, they use a series of tiny 1" slots, regularly spaced about 3/4" apart.. This creates 3/4" dead zones where the rails cannot be connected to each other, and my rack length falls exactly into the middle of one of those gaps.

All other rails I have encountered have much longer slots for greater adustability - XServe & Promise RAID rails are a perfect example of this, there's almost no rack they won't fit in. Even the rails from the Tandberg (formerly Exabyte) Magnum 448's do this correctly, based on the documentation.

Alas, the Magnums seem to be getting phased out by Tandberg in favor of the StorageLibrary, despite their higher capacity. I'm waiting to hear back from Tandberg if they have an updated rail design, otherwise I'm afraid I'll have to RMA the whole package and find a competing product with more sensible mounting hardware.

  • Reliable and fast

    5.0 out of 5 stars

Compact storage for archive or backup that is fast in restoring files and easy to operate, change and feed tapes. Tends to be nois y due to the many fans but is operated in rack anyway. Straight forward display and interface on the front.
