I was a Vmoda user, and after four trade-ins because of poor workmanship, I opted for the Etymotic hf2's. I had used the er-6i headphones before, so I knew what I was expecting. The sound was flat compared to the Vmoda's bleeding base, a change that may take some getting used to. But I have to say that the clarity is what sold this pair for me. Etymotic tries to make their headphones sound as close to live music as they can, and that's how these headphones strike me after a few weeks of use.
The clicker is a little large, but I appreciate the call quality (slightly better than Vmoda), and the clicker seems a lot less cheap than the Vmoda's. I was a little reserved about spending this much on headphones, and after a buy of passion, I'm very happy with my purchase.

the original ear bugs hurt my ears after a short while but what a great switch.
Vmoda lot of bass sound but little bass definition, the switch was crummy from the start and then they started to fall apart. Fortunately they fell apart just as the HF2 came on the market.
HF2 - not as much bass as the Vmoda but I hear the different notes better, no more thump thump thump. The isolation / noise suppression is great and I don't get quite as much of the hearing myself talk as I did with the Vmoda when on the phone. Finally the switch works nicely.
They are, as the name implies, High Fidelity Earphones. They are the best of all I have tried over the years.

Finally - high quality earphones for people with small ears!

These earphones are by far the best I have tried after years of looking for the right product for small ears. The smaller, blue ear tips that come with the Hf2 fit great, and are very comfortable. Of course, these also have amazing sound quality and fabulous sound isolation. The sounds of my NYC commute are filtered out, allowing me to listen to music and podcasts at less than top volume. I'm picky (maybe too picky) about headphones, and have never found in-ears that are comfortable before these. A fabulous product and worth the price. …More

I will agree, these HF2 earplugs are not cheap, however, neither is their quality! Like most, it took a bit of getting used to the fit of the 3-tier earplugs, however, once you get comfortable with them, "man" what a sound; even for someone like me who is addicted to the 'hi-volume' music, I gotta admit, the sounds are crystal clear and the base (although not 'pounding') is crisp and clear too. So for anyone 'on the fence' about these earphones, don't be, they are worth the price if you're a true music lover! After all, it's true that you get what you pay for, at least in this case. I have no problem with the sound and the fit of the buds. My only 2 complaints are:
1. people often tell me they can barely hear me when using this product. I end up having to hold the microphone up to my mouth
2. the product is, for lack of better word, "wirey". The cable doesn't lay flat, it's always protruding out, catching on the arm of my chair or seat belt. If it loops around anything, the rubbery finish is like a vice grip. I've either gotten out of a chair, or out my my vehicle and ripped these right out of the iPhone jack more times than not, because they happened to catch on something. I never had this problem with the Apple ones. If they weren't so expensive I'd throw them away. Instead I'm "re-gifting" them to someone I don't like. …More0 of 5 people found this useful

Get used to the fit and enjoy great sound

These are uncomfortable at first but deliver great sound and block out ambient noise. The right channel stopped working after five months and I replaced them with a nightmare. See below. Initial comfort and short service life lost a star for these phones.
Admittedly, these take some getting used to. Canal buds go right inside your ear canal. Yikes. On a tip from another user, I clipped the last, smallest little bud from the Christmas-tree ear gel and got a more comfortable fit, but they were still weird. Until I stopped noticing.
The reward is great sound. Bass is full and the rest of the spectrum is satisfyingly present. An added bonus (if you consider it so) is that they do a great job of blocking ambient sound. This makes them a POOR choice for driving: keep one ear open or you won't hear sirens, horns, etc.
When the right channel went out I replaced them with a set of iHarmonix headphones and I learned what uncomfortable really means. Etymotics are a bit of a challenge, but iHarmonix will make your ears bleed.
