Overview

Griffin's premium in-car play solution, iTrip AutoPilot lets you play and control your iPod or iPhone as it charges.

iTrip broadcasts the music from your iPod or iPhone to an open FM frequency on your car's FM stereo so you can play your tunes through your car stereo's speakers. RDS technology shows song information on your RDS-enabled car radio display. SmartScan makes it easier than ever to find the perfect frequency. And Griffin's new AutoPilot playback control puts a set of iPod play controls in easy reach--you can stash your iPod or iPhone out of sight in a glove-box or under the seat and still control playback.

Features

  • AutoPilot controls iPod playback from your dash or console's cigarette lighter with the touch of a finger.
  • Industry-leading SmartScan does all the work--scans the radio dial for the three best frequencies then saves them automatically to three programmable preset buttons for easy recall later.
  • New SmartSound Plus technology delivers clear sound under real-world conditions.
  • New high-contrast display.
  • Three-stage light ring changes color to indicate the charging status of your iPod battery.
  • RDS technology shows song information on your RDS-enabled car radio display.

Best FM Transmitter for iPhone 3G

    Written by JM from buffalo

    Jul 23, 2008

I had a Kensington iPod FM transmitter that I used with my original iPhone for a while. The message warning me about iPhone incompatibility was annoying, but I could live with it. That is, until it wouldn't charge my new iPhone 3G...

The iPhone 3G reduces the number of pins on the dock connector that can be used by accessories for charging. Therefore, some older accessories that use the Firewire pins won't charge the 3G.

In summary, this adaptor works PERFECTLY with both the original iPhone and iPhone 3G. There's no annoying warning messages and it charges properly. The autopilot controls work great, and there's even a hidden "international mode" that lets you broadcast at 87.7 and 87.9. Just navigate to function -> mode, then hold the middle button until the Griffin logo moves. I can guarantee little to no interference (outside of a really quiet hiss) when using frequencies below 88.1.

    I love this transmitter!

    Can Be Pretty Good

    Written by AR from Fairport

    Jun 29, 2008

I don't live in a major metropolitan area (Rochester, NY), but there's a fair number of stations that clutter the airwaves here. In my limited usage so far, I've been pretty happy with this unit.

    The Good:
    1. As noted by others, there is no GSM buzz at all. The airplane mode warning is gone and this unit simply works with an iPhone.
    2. I'm exclusively using the hidden international mode to access transmitting on 87.9. On that station, with Smart Sound and Stereo options enabled, I think this unit sounds really good. There is either little or no static, the sound is loud, and the sound is clear.
    3. On that 87.9 frequency, the RDS works pretty well for me. Every now and then it gets hung up, but usually it will sync in again after 30 seconds or at least on the next song.
    4. The buttons on the transmitter (brought over from Griffin's AutoPilot product) are perfect for the iPhone. Before, it was impossible (and dangerous) to fumble with the iPhone's touch screen to switch songs, etc. while driving. Now, it's dirt simple.

    The Bad:
    1. The transmitter is definitely underpowered. When I drive to work, every now and then I get stuck behind a car that is obviously using the same frequency as me (87.9 in my case due to it's popularity). Their devices drown mine out, even from about 4 car lengths away. I get stuck listening to Howard Stern for a few minutes every day from someone's Sirius device. Also, the station I used to use is overcome by static now, where as my last device could overpower it. Further, I accidentally had my old device and the iTrip plugged in at the same time on the same frequency and I heard nothing. No static, no music. My old device was completely overpowering my iTrip with silence since nothing was attached to it.

    2. I don't think the iPhone screen ever turns off when connected, it just dims, which makes the iPhone fairly hot.

    3. While I haven't really tested the auto scan, I'm not sure it works that well. The stations it picked for me on one or two tests didn't seem to work well. But I think this is still more tied to the lack of power than anything else.

That's really it. If it weren't for the lack of power on the transmitter, I'd give this 5 stars. For my car (2004.5 Volvo S40), there is no easy direct connection option for it's MOST audio system. So the combination of a tuner that works (on 87.9 at least), RDS, charging, and real buttons for play/pause etc. makes for a great product in my mind.

However, if you can't take advantage of the 87.9 frequency or don't know if any frequencies around you that are open, I highly suggest buying from a place that you feel comfortable returning this unit to. Because the lack of transmission can be a serious issue in my mind, as is the case with any FM transmitter.

    Works very very well

    Written by JM from Darien

Just picked this up today for the iPhone 3G and it works perfectly with it. No airplane mode message, charges the phone and plays music. If you switch the country mode to Japanese and use the 87.9 frequency you will almost always get crystal clear audio. If you have the dough and are looking for one of these I highly recommend it. Sounds good, poor build quality.

Written by KB from Inver Grove Heights

    Oct 8, 2009

I was able to get near perfect sound quality from my Griffin iTrip, unlike the first FM transmitter I tried for my iphone I was able to get good reception without pops and snaps. Unfortunately after a month or two from use the cable shielding started to pull loose from all ends of the cabling. At first a few months in the ipod remote controls were the first thing to stop working but a few months after that the device has completely stopped working and there are many exposed cables. I only have one car and never removed it except for when I was cleaning so I don't think that constant plugging and unplugging can be to blame. As far as I can tell the it''s because the it was either built badly or cheaply, if you're spending a benjamin I think you can do a lot better than this device. More

The iTrip isn't worth the money you'll be paying.
    It is poorly constructed.
    The sound quality isn't great.
Finding a clear station is dreadful in a major (and some minor) cities.
And the round interface dealie only works half the time.
Pass on this product and look for something more reliable.
