i have liked this drive since i got it, it is simple, consistent, and fast, but today its true value was made incredibly clear. last night i was taking a load of clothes out of the washer and i saw my USB drive lying on the bottom of the recently finished regular cycle. i let it sit over night, hoping that somehow my data could be retrieved, and today it is running like a champ, like nothing ever happened. i highly recommend it. …More

I don't like burning disks for back ups & my storage needed isn't enough for an external drive. I used zip disks because they could be written over, even though they weren't popular any more and out-of-date. The Gizmo solved my problem and is so easy to use. I need to transfer data to another computer when we go south for the winter. It is perfect for this use as well as daily use and so economical. …More

From the description this appears to be a simple USB drive without any software or hardware enabled encryption. However you can copy encrypted DMG images onto any USB drive for security if you wish. Just use Disk Utility to create your disk image on the drive or on the Mac and once closed, copy it to the drive.
Also, you can use Disk Utility to reformat and optionally partition any (almost any) USB drive to get rid of pre-installed software (usually Windows stuff.) Be aware of the Partition Map Scheme and Format if you want to transfer files to Windows computers. Most generic USB drives are MBR/FAT and work with both Macs and PCs, but drives custom tuned for Macs might be APM/HFS+. …More- Answered by AG from San Pedro
