    Math made fun

    Written by VB from Collingswood

    Nov 29, 2007

My 9 year old played this in his class then asked for it at home. It has helped him learn to multiply and divide while having fun doing it. He actually comes home from school and asks to play it, you can't beat that. Works great on a G4 Mini Mac. His 7 year old friend also likes the add and subtract level and has asked his parents to get it for him as well. More

    Impossibly Slow Gameplay

    Written by TF from Naperville

    Nov 2, 2007

The graphics look nice and the concept of the gameplay looks like it will be an asset to my kids, but not in its current state. I have Math Blaster: Master the Basics installed on an iMac G5, 2GHz, 1GB machine running 10.4.10 and the gameplay is so sloooow that it takes 6-8 seconds for the character to take a single step. At that rate it is impossible for anyone to play the game since it takes 5 to 10 minutes just to complete one math problem. (I gave up trying to accumulate the 4 points I needed to solve 3+1.) I currently have a call in to Knowledge Adventure's technical support (2-Nov-2007) and I sent them an e-mail containing a video of the pathetic game speed. I guess we'll see if they fix it soon. Otherwise it is a waste of my money. My only other complaint is that the game forces 800x600 resolution on my 20" monintor, which messes up any open windows. Games these days should be able to adapt to the monitor resolution, or at least play within a window so that the monitor's resolution doesn't need to be screwed up. At least they restore the resolution when the game quits. More

    Fast Paced

I just bought this for my grandson today. I found it fast, but I have a Mac with an Intel chip. It went so fast that I think my grandson will be challenged. I only went through a few of the beginning addition problems and found it challenging to do the addition and do the moves at the same time. The jumping took some skill. More

Game will not work without the CD in the drive at all times? Really?

    Written by KM from Louisville

I bought this for my 6 year old and installed on my Snow Leopard Mac (10.6.2). When I tried to launch the game but I got an error. I called their tech support team who said they really don't know much about Macs, but he would try to help. As it turns out, the game can only be played off the CD, meaning the kids have to install the CD each time they want to play (which seems really old school?).

The game itself is just ok... it's played with the arrow keys, has colorful graphics, but seems to be more focused on moving the little guy around the screen than on the math... I played for 15 minutes and I would say it is 90% video game and 10% math? The transition from one section to the next (which happened 3 times in my 15 minutes) seemed to be very slow going... I'm not sure it will hold the attention of a 6 year old (it barely help mine).

I am really debating if I should return it for another game by School Zone... which I know work great on OS X, they run off the HD, have great graphics with a quick pace and easy transitions between tasks. I know for sure I would not buy another game by Knowledge Adventures.

    The kids like it!

I'll keep this short - My ten-year-old, and my six-year-old love the game! The older son helped his brother get thru the sticky spots of the game, and both are doing much better with their math scores!

Has good potential as a learning tool

Written by JG from North Kingstown

I purchased this game for my 10 year old grandson who has severe ADHD. Although the game appears somewhat slow, it is the perfect pace for him because he has to concentrate on the action while solving the problems at the same time. And because it is an action game, he is much more willing to practice his math skills. His 12 year old sister also finds it fun, even though she can easily solve the problems. As a learning tool, I would recommend this for younger children who are learning the basics or children of any age who need the math work, otherwise, it is simply another computer game. More
