    Great Capture Card!

    I've had this since early November of 2007 and these are my thoughts...

    First off, I'm using a Mac Pro Quad @ 2.66Ghz with 3 Gigs of RAM, two 250GB hard drives running on Leopard OS X. I haven't tried using this card with a Windows OS on a bootcamp partition. So I can't help you there.

    The Good:
    -Simple to install.
    -The software downloads and PDF manual are always free at their website.
    -Captures through Composite (yellow), Component (red, green, blue) or HDMI (480i/NTSC, 720p, 1080i) with the choice of a couple codecs to choose from (JPEG, NTSC, DVCPRO and Uncompressed).
    -No delay from source to output (even while capturing).
    -Upscale SD to HD or downscale HD to SD while capturing.
    -I LOVE using it with Final Cut Pro and After Effects CS3 (highest point) because it's instantly responsive and it's nice to see how my projects look on a separate monitor.
    -Captured HD footage looks great!

    The Not So Good:
    -It doesn't capture 480p. (lame, knowing I have to de-interlace NTSC footage if I were to upload the video on the internet).
    -You HAVE to know which format you're capturing and/or editing whether it's NTSC, 720p or 1080i. You select the format in the "Easy Setup" in Final Cut Pro. Just make sure the incoming and project format is the same.
    -When the card doesn't seem to work, you either have to restart your computer or re-install the software to right itself. Weird, but that's what works for me (and it doesn't take long at all).

    Verdict:
    Since I don't like de-interlacing video, I usually capture in 720p (which still looks great!) with the DVCPRO codec. Again, it's really awesome to work with in Final Cut Pro and to see how your projects look through another monitor and how responsive it is scrolling through the timeline. That and capturing HD footage are the definite selling points (in my book). The one major downer is not being able to capture in 480p but I can live with it. Overall, this capture card is a great product! Definitely worth the clams.

    Superb Card

    I'm pretty ticked that guy gave it 1 star because of his sheer stupidity. The card works great on a boot camp system, a hackintosh, and systems that are exclusive to OS X and Vista/XP. The moron probably didn't realize that you have to go into Control Panel/Preferences (under Apple menu) to change input settings.

    It's his fault he's missing out on a great product. The video quality is superb and the Final Cut Pro support is excellent. I highly recommend this card for both HDMI and analog capturing as it does a terrific job with both. Don't be fooled by the 3 star average. The guy who put one star down is simply a fool when it comes to knowing how to use computers. If you can install the card, then you *should* be savvy enough to use it. Plain and simple.     …More

    Great with Final Cut Pro

    I bought this card in order to monitor hd content from fcp. It works great. Only once have I had a problem with it. Even though it says it only supports 1080i 60 it works with 24p too! And best of all the price is great. I have not tried capturing uncompressed through hdmi yet (I'm not sure if my g raid (0 config) at firewire 800 is fast enough to support uncompressed hd. …More

    Your devices/Macs may not be supported

    Newer HDMI dongles from iPad to Intensity pro wont work however the older (model A1388) HDMI cable will work. So if you have the clips on your HMDI dongle for iPad it wont work. Also trying to capture video from a Macbook Air wont work for me. Company says theres a difference between refresh rate and frame rate. They only support TV formats so some PC formats/computers wont work. Buyer beware. …More

    The description of this product is misleading

    I wanted to watch uncompressd movies made from iMovie connected to my TV via HDMI; if you read the product description you think it is just what you need. Not so. I installed the card and the drivers and it did not work. I e-mailed the tech at Blackmagic: This is what he said:

    That application will never be able to utilize our card. You will need to purchase Final Cut Pro if you wish to use our card to monitor your video while you are editing. That is not a support application and is not designed to utilize our card. I don't believe Apple ever intended it to be able to interface with 3rd party hardware.

    Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but if you want to use our card to monitor your editing, you will have to get something like FCP in order to use our card.

    Final Cut pro cost $999.00 a rather large increase from iMovie. Unfortunately I have to return the card.     …More

    Unfortunatily I think this card is for towers only! I dont think the MacBook Pro has sufficient room for it! I think Blackmagic Design has an breakout box that can be used with laptops! …More

    No. This is a PCI Express expansion card - only Mac Pros have that type of expansion slot.
