Tunes without the risk of headphones

Written by BV from The Colony

I've been looking for this for a while. I cycle to work everyday, as well as in long organized rides and I've found that listening to music gives you something to focus on besides the pain in your legs, lungs, etc. I stay away from using headphones because you can't hear what's going on around you.

I've tried many different hacks like portable speakers in a backpack with varying degrees of success. The downfalls have been things like "destroyed by rain" or one jbl rig that had a power protection circuit that shut the amp off after about 20 minutes.

Finally there is something designed specifically for use on a bicycle. It mounts like a water bottle cage. I'm impressed with how tightly it all fits together -- your iPod doesn't rattle around and its very well protected.

I put it on the bike this evening and rode some bumpy roads. It stayed snugly in place. Its loud enough to be heard over high wind and the remote control works perfectly.

    HEAD'S UP

Written by AM from New York

    Oct 12, 2007

The product seems great enough, I ordered it and it came today. It's pretty smart looking, but a little bulkier than I had imagined - imagine a tall water bottle that's a little wider in girth and that's about it. The sound is good for the size, a little tinny - don't expect any low-end at all, I wouldn't say it was AMAZING, but you could definitely hear it and it serves its purpose well - I would imagine that in a loud city environment, it'd be hard to hear above all the noise, but in a quieter country setting, would be just fine. Indoors, it sounded just great, even the mid-range was richer than expected.

However, Apple has made a mistake on its website with it's iPod-compatibility list. NOTE: It is NOT compatible with the iPod Touch, I confirmed this with the actual company. So, I had to return it because of this, it actually doesn't fit by only a few millimeters, but enough so the cap does not lock and close shut.

Other than that, it is a great product, I'm sure Apple will be removing the iPod Touch off the list for this product.

    This speaker is awesom but...

    Written by TL from Austin

The speaker was a great buy, and makes the a long bike ride easier, without messing with ear buds. Plus everyone can hear you coming! But buyer be warned, I have a third gen nano and it kept getting detached from the plug inside after the slightest bump. Despite the inserts it doesn't keep a snug fit. After I "jimmy-rigged" some cloth and stuffed it inside real tight, it was smooth sailing from there. It stunk that I had to do that but it's a small price to pay. Sound could be better (especially the base), but it definitely is loud enough and clear enough for riding enjoyment. I definitely recommend this product to any cyclist. More

Not worth it...but Apple still rocks!

The controls are pretty good. After a couple days, I could control the speaker without taking the remote out of my pocket. The sound was decent to begin with. I used it when I was on my treadmill and it worked nice for that. It is a lot bigger than I thought also.

But it got really distorted after a couple weeks of use. Pretty useless. Apple was totally awesome about making it right. That's why I keep coming back!

    Excellent sound. Bad controls.

I purchased this product to put on my road bike because I can’t hear traffic with headphones on. This unit is very loud and clear with wonderful sound reproduction. It is very well made with good plastics and seems very secure. However, all this quality was rendered useless because of the remote. The remote would not work if it was more than an inch away from the unit. The radio only had a power button and with out the remote I couldn’t change songs or adjust the volume. I changed the batteries and it still wouldn’t work. I even took it apart and extended the antenna to three feet and that helped a little but it was not very practical. It would be better if they could put the controls on the radio as well as on a remote. It you can get one that works I’m sure it will be a great product. More

    Great accessory

This is such a great investment. I had been commuting and using a headset and was thinking of buying a blue tooth headset. So glad I didn't. This is much safer as you tend to "tune out" while cycling with headphones imho. Much more enjoyable than headphones and another plus is the share factor on rides with the spouse:) More
