Thin, minimal design.
The lightweight, durable Smart Cover has been completely redesigned for the all-new design of iPad Air. It protects your iPad Air screen without covering up its durable aluminum back. So your iPad still looks and feels like an iPad — just with a little extra protection.
The Smart Cover is made of polyurethane and comes in six great colors. It also features a soft, color-matched microfiber lining that helps keep your display clean.
A hinge magnetically aligns the Smart Cover with iPad Air for a perfect fit, while magnets inside help it stay put.
The Smart Cover does double duty as a keyboard stand. Fold it back to tilt iPad Air into a comfortable writing position.
Wake on open. Sleep on close.
Open the Smart Cover, and iPad Air magically wakes up. Close it, and iPad Air automatically goes to sleep.
FaceTime and movie stand.
The Smart Cover folds in just the right places to become the perfect FaceTime and movie-watching stand.

Big step backward in overall usability
Because of the smaller size of the iPad air, this cover does not fold over and magnetize out of the way for regular usage. Yes, yo Because of the smaller size of the iPad air, this cover does not fold over and magnetize out of the way for regular usage. Yes, you can fold it up and then hold that in your hand, but the moment you let go or try to pass the iPad to someone else, it all just flops back open.
You can (kind of), get it to magnetize completely open on the backside of the iPad, but this is a VERY weak magnetic connection that falls apart at the slightest vibration, and it also means the 'open' backside is the 'soft' interior of the smart cover, so if you set the iPad down in that configuration, any dust/debris will now be stuck to the 'inside' of your cover (which will then eventually get closed back onto your iPad screen).
I cannot fathom why for the price they could not have included some additional magnets within the 'middle' folds of the cover so that when you fold it upon itself on the back of the iPad it all just stays magnetized in place.
As it exists now, this cover is only useful in the 'closed' position or when being used in the 'stand' configuration. For the 90% of the time when you actually just want the cover open to use the iPad while in your hands, this cover is a flopping, annoying distraction that, if you're anything like me, you'll constantly want remove.
On the plus side of the new design: the metal hinges of the old smart cover have been replaced with just an extension of the same material the cover is made from. So I no longer worry about the metal hinges scratching the back of the iPad where they connect or scratching a delicate surface that the iPad is set down onto.
Also, the magnets seem to be much stronger than with previous iterations of the case, so it doesn't fall off unintentionally as often as the old one did.
But overall I would recommend that you DO NOT BUY THIS COVER at this price. There just has to be a more clever design out there that makes the cover less annoying for every day usage. …

Disappointed...far from Apple's usual quality

Otherwise, I'm stuck with a $40 accessory that probably won't last more than 3-4 months. Biggest gripe is the material used for the hinge is too weak. After a couple days of use, material weakens and the cover no longer stays on straight nor does the stand feature work as it should. I'm constantly shifting the folded cover triangle to make it sit straight. I had one of these for my iPad3 which performed beautifully. Not this current version. Wish I could return it...but for you I wish you take this review to heart and avoid buying this cover. …

Massive Quality Downgrade - 3 Panels vs. 4
I originally had a the first leather Smart Cover for iPad 2. Loved it, it was incredible. Having just bought and iPad air, I bough I originally had a the first leather Smart Cover for iPad 2. Loved it, it was incredible. Having just bought and iPad air, I bought a new Smart Cover as well. I want to love it, I really do. When apple redesigned the Smart Cover to contain 3 panels instead of 2, the structural integrity of the folded Smart Cover went completely down the drain. It is CONSTANTLY collapsing to the point where I am not even comfortable using it for the purpose it was created. …

No exception this time. It works great as it should be . I don't really understand why those reviews giving low ratings. I think they either don't know how to use this propery or got inferior ones.
But, one thing you should know is that this is defferent from old smart covers with metal magnets. For those of you who have used iPad mini with their smart covers, that's exactly how it feels. …
