Thin, minimal design.
The lightweight, durable Smart Cover has been completely redesigned for the all-new design of iPad Air. It protects your iPad Air screen without covering up its durable aluminum back. So your iPad still looks and feels like an iPad — just with a little extra protection.
The Smart Cover is made of polyurethane and comes in six great colors. It also features a soft, color-matched microfiber lining that helps keep your display clean.
A hinge magnetically aligns the Smart Cover with iPad Air for a perfect fit, while magnets inside help it stay put.
The Smart Cover does double duty as a keyboard stand. Fold it back to tilt iPad Air into a comfortable writing position.
Wake on open. Sleep on close.
Open the Smart Cover, and iPad Air magically wakes up. Close it, and iPad Air automatically goes to sleep.
FaceTime and movie stand.
The Smart Cover folds in just the right places to become the perfect FaceTime and movie-watching stand.

A big step back as a keyboard stand
Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo and video but the connection part is so unstable now that typing experience just got much much worse, it's considerably more unstable that I find it annoying typing on a constantly shaking surface. …

Much worse than original Smart Cover
After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air. The new covers are worse in every way. The three panels instead of four causes the cover to be less stable when in its stand position, and the cover did not stay on the iPad very well and shifted back and forth, leaving parts of the screen exposed. I was also disappointed at the lack of a leather option. I returned the new Smart Cover and will be looking for a different option. …

This one not so much. Seems like since they completely covered up the magnet that connects it to the iPad its not as stable. I falls off all the time and I certainly can't use it on my lap because it always folds out. They really didn't think this one thru. Will probably return it and look for alternatives. Especially at a $39 price point. Not good. Feels very cheap …

Poor design, a step back

As many others have noticed, it doesn't fit snugly, it doesn't work well as a stand, and the material itself feels much cheaper than the earlier models. Partly, this is because the iPad Air is just a bit a narrower, so they were presumably forced to eliminate one of the four original folding panels. But it's hard to see how they could have gone so badly wrong here. You want this thing to protect your iPad, but it's almost more of a hazard than a help. The first time I used it as a stand, it nearly fell off the table three times! That never happened with the older ones. …

Don't waste your money. This piece of junk doesn't work. The stand is constantly falling down. The 3 vs 4 panel is sleeker, but so Don't waste your money. This piece of junk doesn't work. The stand is constantly falling down. The 3 vs 4 panel is sleeker, but so flimsy don't bother using the stand. If I move the stand at all when in use it completely falls down. The 3 panel doesn't snap solidly into place, it merely rests on a seam...and is only slightly magnetized. It doesn't work. Piece of junk. …

You could take off the case to use your keyboard and them re-attach when finished. …
