Thin, minimal design.
The lightweight, durable Smart Cover has been completely redesigned for the all-new design of iPad Air. It protects your iPad Air screen without covering up its durable aluminum back. So your iPad still looks and feels like an iPad — just with a little extra protection.
The Smart Cover is made of polyurethane and comes in six great colors. It also features a soft, color-matched microfiber lining that helps keep your display clean.
A hinge magnetically aligns the Smart Cover with iPad Air for a perfect fit, while magnets inside help it stay put.
The Smart Cover does double duty as a keyboard stand. Fold it back to tilt iPad Air into a comfortable writing position.
Wake on open. Sleep on close.
Open the Smart Cover, and iPad Air magically wakes up. Close it, and iPad Air automatically goes to sleep.
FaceTime and movie stand.
The Smart Cover folds in just the right places to become the perfect FaceTime and movie-watching stand.

A big step back as a keyboard stand
Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo Before this I had iPad 3 and the Smart Cover is way better. The new one's three fold design makes better to hold iPad up for photo and video but the connection part is so unstable now that typing experience just got much much worse, it's considerably more unstable that I find it annoying typing on a constantly shaking surface. …

Much worse than original Smart Cover
After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air After using a 3rd generation iPad with the original leather Smart Cover and loving it, I bought a new Smart Cover with my iPad air. The new covers are worse in every way. The three panels instead of four causes the cover to be less stable when in its stand position, and the cover did not stay on the iPad very well and shifted back and forth, leaving parts of the screen exposed. I was also disappointed at the lack of a leather option. I returned the new Smart Cover and will be looking for a different option. …

This one not so much. Seems like since they completely covered up the magnet that connects it to the iPad its not as stable. I falls off all the time and I certainly can't use it on my lap because it always folds out. They really didn't think this one thru. Will probably return it and look for alternatives. Especially at a $39 price point. Not good. Feels very cheap …

Great iPad cover which improves stability
After reading the reviews I was a little hesitant to purchase this item.

I did buy it and am glad I did. The complaint about the "panels" of it being different sizes or the same as the iPad but the third one being cut short from the original smart cover is incorrect.
There are two panels that ARE the same size then the third one is shorter, but if you compare it to the iPad smart cover the panels are not the same size. It wasn't just taking the original and making it "fit" the iPad Air.
This is actually a engineered difference. When it is folded up and the magnet is engaged the two long panels give a longer edge for when it is up to watch a movie giving MUCH more stability than the original smart cover.
It is also different for when laid down to type but is still very strong. The only time I could think it would collapse is if you bang real hard while typing....and if your doing that anyways your not typing correctly. :O)
While some people think it is a cheaper material with it no longer having metal hinges and what not. To me this was also on purpose to make it lighter. It is a strong vinyl and I would speculate that it would last longer than the metal hinges but only time will tell on that. It is very solidly built and am quite happy about with it. The magnets do hold well and are strong.
This is a very nice cover for your iPad. I recommend it to all. …

It's Just Barely OK

Turns out the demo they gave me was I read some of the other reviews and was hesitant but went to the store to try it out anyway. Turns out the demo they gave me was actually an older generation and now that I'm home I don't think the iPad air cover is quite as good. The older generation had 4 folds which seemed to inherently stay in the triangle better. The magnet on the newer one does also seem to be weaker, as commented by others. It's barely strong enough to even keep the cover closed. These two things mean that it's a borderline failure on functionality.
I will say that I'm happy with the materials and quality. I also like how it attaches to the iPad better than previous generations.
Overall, it seems quite overpriced for something that is just barely ok. There's a good chance this one is heading back to the store. …

I'm glad I paid those revie I'm not sure why there are so many reviews saying it's flimsy and/or the magnets aren't strong enough. I'm glad I paid those reviews no attention because I'm having the complete opposite experience. I also love the fact that it doesn't take from the from factor of the iPad Air. I recommend this cover. …
