Product Information

Back up a lifetime’s worth of memories with AirPort Time Capsule, a wireless hard drive that works seamlessly with Time Machine in OS X. It’s also a full-featured Wi-Fi base station with the latest 802.11ac technology and simultaneous dual-band support. Choose from 2TB and 3TB models.
  • Automatic wireless backup.

AirPort Time Capsule includes a 2TB or 3TB hard drive that works with Time Machine in OS X to create the perfect no-hassle backup solution.1 There are no cables, and you can back up all the Mac computers in your home to a central location — automatically, wirelessly, and in the background.

    Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

With 802.11ac technology and a powerful beamforming antenna array, AirPort Time Capsule gives you up to 3x faster Wi-Fi and a stronger, clearer signal.2 And because it transmits at both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies at the same time, your wireless devices will automatically connect to the best available band for the fastest performance possible.

    Designed with performance in mind.

With the antennas at the top of the elevated design, AirPort Time Capsule now has a higher platform for dispersing the signal. We also increased the number of antennas. There are now six of them — three for the 2.4GHz band and three for the 5GHz band. Together with 802.11ac technology, they let you connect faster, farther, and with more power than ever before.

Easy setup for iOS and OS X.

Connect your DSL or cable modem to AirPort Time Capsule and use the built-in setup assistant to create your new wireless network in just a few taps from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. If you’re using a Mac, use the built-in AirPort Utility. Setup is just as fast and just as easy.

Share your hard drive or printer.

AirPort Time Capsule can turn any external USB hard drive into a secure drive you can share across your Wi-Fi network. So all the documents, videos, photos, and other files instantly become available to anyone, Mac and PC users alike. You can even connect a printer and share it wirelessly.

    Compatibility and security.

Any Wi-Fi device you have will work with AirPort Time Capsule. That’s because it’s compatible with devices using the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, and 802.11ac specifications. And since AirPort Time Capsule features a built-in firewall that protects your network from malicious Internet attacks, you can enjoy the web with peace of mind.

Not sure, had a airport extreme and express (to extend range) in home and decided to replace both with this 3TB 2013 Time Capsule and have an easy backup drive built in, so far excellent. Range seems to be way better, set up was a breeze, just left everything at default settings (didn't mess with channels, or 5gz) and so far getting my paid for speeds throughout the house on speedtest on iPhone 5's, macbook pro retina, air, iPads etc. The time machine backup is also amazingly a breeze, backing up 3 different machines, don't have to partition the drive based on which machine, you just tell it to backup to the time capsule and it figures it out for you. Love it. One small minor wish, Apple make a BLACK one please, it would blend in with people's components better like the apple tv, but whatever.

I am really happy with the Bonjour printing support. On my Mac it worked without any changes. On my Windows 7 box, I downloaded the Bonjour driver and then it worked.

The time machine backup is going to take 18 hours for starters but after that I'm looking forward to having constant backups on the mac.

This unit is larger than I expected, about the size of a brick. It is quite heavy, probably from the hard drive within.

Overall, I'm happy with this purchase.

  • The best wireless ROUTER/BACKUP solution out there!

I love how it stable and quickly This is by far the most functional and most controllable (with app) router via any iDevice/Mac! I love how it stable and quickly it backs up my MacBook Pro and other household Mac devices. It is possible to use it as a stand alone 'network drive' but that's not what this device is designed to be. Like I said, it is possible, you just have to search the 'net for the "how-to".

The internet connection is solid. Initially, it wasn't, but after updating the firmware, it runs like a champ. I have never had to reset this router at all since then (it's been at least 6 months or maybe even longer).

The tech specs and description speaks for itself, but if you use this as it is intended to be used (a backup source, hence 'time capsule' not 'network drive'); you will be more than pleased with it's speed, range and durability.

I'm so tired of these 1 star reviews tainting the final overall score of this exceptional product. Use it for what it is and rate it for what it's supposed to do, not what you were hoping it would or wouldn't be!

  • Very unstable, and Airport Utility is virtually useless

Every time we run Airport Utility the Time Capsule "cannot be found". We have to power recycle the Time Capsule. Every time! Then one and only one of our many devices kept dropping off of the LAN until I changed IPv6 settings on both Time Capsule and iMac. Really, Apple? Apple tech support has zero clue as to why this is happening and refuses to help. My Time Capsule is essentially becoming a very, very expensive paperweight. Thanks a lot, Apple!

    1) Receive the device a day sooner than expected
    2) Took it home over lunch break, opened the package, verified it was in perfect shape (it was)
    3) Removed my Netgear NightHawk router from my LAN
    4) Plugged necessary data cables into the device, then powered it up
    5) Made a trip to the next room to my iMac
    6) Spent PRECISELY three (3) minutes turning on Time Capsule and configuring the device via the Airport app in "Utilities"
    7) Started the first backup of my iMac (588 Gigs)
    8) Made and devoured a party pizza (15 minutes)
    9) Went to check, and discovered that everything was already done!

Fast, easy and, considering the backup potential with 3 TB, not terribly expensive. For real-world testing, I ran five speed tests using www.speedtest.net, and my 50/5MB connection tested at 48.6/4.73 via wireless.

    HAPPY CUSTOMER!
