I tried the Amazon Basic DVD drive, but the speed is so slow that I had to return it. The Apple USB SuperDrive doesn't have this problem, though.

Seriously. The retina display has a resolution of 2880 x 1800. I think it's time for 1080p viewability.

Although it still irks me that such a device is even necessary in this day and age. Sure improved portability is a nice feature but taking away the optical disk drive to do so seems silly. Overall no complaints, however.

I was hesitant to buy based on the mediocre/negative reviews, but I figured an Apple product would work better than any other, so I was hesitant to buy based on the mediocre/negative reviews, but I figured an Apple product would work better than any other, so I bought it. Plugged the device in, sent it a playlist from iTunes and the disc burned in about three minutes, no problems - exactly as it does on all of my Macs with internal optical drives. My only complaint would be that the USB cable is only long enough to have the drive directly under the iMac.

I think there are many inaccurate reviews of this drive which have driven down the overall rating for this product. It works exactly as described and I am using it to rip DVDs so I can watch them on an iPad and iPhone. Works perfectly and is faster than I expected. I can rip a DVD movie in about 20-30 minutes depending on the length of the movie. Overall, I would highly recommend this drive.
