Watch slideshows and movies on the big screen in up to 720p by connecting your iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) to an HDTV or HDMI-compatible display.

The Apple Digital AV Adapter routes digital audio to screens that support it.

    Works like Steve says

Mirrors nearly any app off the iPad 2 - with audio - over the HDMI cable. Looks great on my Samsung HDTV. Also works on the DVI monitors and projector at work with an HDMI to DVI connector changer.

Works on the iPhone 4 and iPad 1 for movies and other apps that support video-out (like Keynote, GoodReader and Atomic browser).

Can charge and do video out at the same time by plugging in both the HDMI cable and the charger. Should also work with both the HDMI cable and the camera connection kit at the same time, too.

The only very minor negative is that the 30-pin connector end is a bit thick and may not fit through with some iPhone and iPad cases.

Tested it the first day at launch. Works great and I tested all the apps that I could think of, movies, and music. All worked perfectly.

Only thing is that the adapter hangs oddly off the ipad 2

This device should be recalled by Apple

The Apple Digital AV Adapter that I purchased did not work with my iPhone 4. I tried using several HDMI cables and two TV sets to rule out other hardware problems. The adapter worked initially with Netflix and then froze. The PBS application would only stream sound and no video. It would not even display photos consistently. Based on many other reviews in this forum expressing similar problems, Apple should pull this device from the market. Thiis product is not ready for consumer use. More

Where's the evidence of any quality control being practiced for this produ?

I'm very disappointed that this adapter doesn't perform as advertised.

Not only did the connector NOT fit snugly in my either my or my wife's iPhone 4S sockets which prevented ANY display on my HDMI tv due to the tv not seeing the connection at all, on my iPad I was able to get a couple of streaming vidios to work, but not as the product description represents - i.e, 'whatever you see on your iPad, you'll see on your HDMI tv! Very unreliable and quite frankly a waste of money. I'm returning the unit I purchased and requesting a replacement - hopefully it'll work! If not, you'll be sure to hear about it!

Seems that quailty control re Apple accessories has been put on the back burner!

I saw a YouTube Video whereas it demonstrated that the IPAD was incompatible with the USB memory stick. Furthermore, it did not have enough power to power a USB powered External hard drive and did not even recognize a AC powered hard drive.

Conclusion, at this time you cannot connect an IPAD to an external hard drive. However, with a max of 64 gig and the demand to view medial such as movies and pictures it seems Apple would add this feature to their IPADs.

It seems to me that his is a high demand feature.

    simple answer - YES
in depth answer - the only way this can be done as far as i know is by using one of two apps. one is for windows, the other is for Mac. this is done through a common wifi connection. this means that there is a very bad lag when dragging windows and watching movies and probably all other tasks. so basically yes it can, but quite poorly. the only way that it could be done really well and smoothly is by using the HDMI connection to the computer. but i don't think that it can be done yet. so when the IOS allows it (I HOPE) the ipad can be properly used as a secondary monitor. but if you cannot wait for that (thats only if it happens) then here are the two apps necessary for this process. for Mac - "Air display". and for windows - "MaxiVista". both of these apps have sister software for your computer. the apps are kinda expensive at $9.99 for airdisplay and $12.99 for maxivista. they include instructions for the whole process. enjoy your second monitor :) More

You can use it for the same things you can currently use the other video connectors for (VGA, Component, etc). This is limited to photos, videos, and output from specific apps like Chopper 2. Safari does not have a video out function. More
