This card can be confirmed to run in a Mac Pro 1,1 model. I have it installed and am using it right now. The only thing that has yet to function ia audio output via the mini displayports.

Snow Leopard 10.6.4 AND the Snow Leopard Graphics Update are required for this card to function as a 3D renderer (will function as a 2D raster device in 10.5.8, and in 10.6.3 and below, at least allowing you to install the card first and then update the software).

Currently, Aperture 3 ONLY uses the GPU when applying, and rendering adjustments. Everything else is CPU bound.

If you are having slow response with sliders, or brushing on adjustments, the card may be worth upgrading.

The biggest change would be that the 5870 has 2x the amount of VRAM and aperture can start to run slow If you've brushed on a lot of layers, and there isn't enough VRAM to hold all the layers in the video card's memory - Another factor here is if you have 2 displays at high resolution - You will need more VRAM.

There's really no scientific way to test this, but I've found that you need at least 256MB of vram per display for aperture 3 to work well with 21MP raw files.

Yes. I'm using one in a 2008 Mac Pro Quad core now.

If you buy one, note the instructions are a little different as they are for a later model, but the principles are the same. The kit comes with two cables that both need to be plugged into the mother board. The sockets are located on the top left hand side. Removing hard drive 2 makes it easier to see them. You will also need to release your old card by pressing the black clip at the back of the card. You can see identical clips on any empty sockets you may have. You will also need to remove the second blanking plate at the back (it just slides out).

The card produces a lot more heat than the ATI 2600XT I had before, so make sure the back is kept clear to let out the fan's exhaust air.

Full HD video (1080p) runs really smoothly now.

No. As clearly stated in Sonnet's product specs, the expansion chassis you mention accepts 7.75" long cards maximum. This graphics card is far too long to physically fit. Furthermore, this card alone requires a MINIMUM of 150 watts. As this is the total available power for the expansion chassis, even if it fit, you would not have enough power for another expansion card. More

    Answer

10.6 as of 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 was as reliable as 10.5 so you shouldn't fear the upgrade. That said, no these cards won't work with 10.5 as they require the drivers that are bundled in 10.6.4 (ATI 5000 series). More
