Does what it needs to do but with a price

Lets face-it this thing is way overpriced for what you get. It is nice with its aluminium container but last time i checked the marked aluminium is a cheep metal. Beware this only works with the Macbook Air. Product does burn fast and seems to read cd's and DVD's as fast as a built in drive. I suggest getting some white electrical tape a reinforcing the wires were it comes out of the in-closer. More

This is the newer model SuperDrive

    • Written by from San Jose

According to Apple, this newer SuperDrive may be able to burn dual-layer DVD's better.

I have the both SuperDrives and they still work fine for installing software and playing DVD's.

One star off because of the poor cord connector going into the SuperDrive.

    Shoddy Product

    • Written by from Los Gatos

Be aware that the cord for this item is short. The rubber casing around the cord broke at the ends about 2 months in because of the short cord. Not well thought out. Plus moving your computer at all moves the drive which sometimes messes with the playback. Yes I probably could have bought an extension, but should you really have to buy an (second) additional item after spending $1700? It's bad enough that the air doesn't have a built in disc drive. Does not recognize over 60% of the CDs!!

    • Written by from Eindhoven

I have a CD collection of over 50 original CDs and 30 of them can not be played or ripped. I went to the local Apple store and they also noticed this problem, but there was nothing they could do to fix it. They gave me a new one, but still same problem. Then I called the apple help desk, and the lady on the phone even thought the macbook air superdrive was not an Apple product... come on... The build in CD player of the macbook pro seems to actually do all the work and plays and rips all my CDs. To bad I got stuck to this macbook air... So if you love music, do not buy a macbook air in combination with the superdrive. As I was told, the laser in the superdrive is to weak to read all the CDs... What a terrible product... More

Nice, but could scratch the disk

    • Written by from glendale

The superdrive is nice, but the edges are sharp on the edges of the slot. If you're not careful, you could damage your disks. I wish i knew that before damaging a disk for software that is worth hundreds of dollars. So... buyer beware, use caution when inserting disks. More

The SuperDrive only works on Mac computers that lack an internal optical drive so no, the SuperDrive would not work on an iMac with a broken optical drive. You can however, bring the iMac to any Apple store and if it is still under warranty, it can possibly be fixed free of charge depending on the damage which caused it. Otherwise, Apple can repair/replace the internal optical drive for a fee. More

No it doesn't and probably never will. People have been asking for it ever since it came out but Apple long decided that online streaming is the future. I would love for them to put in blu ray but I highly doubt they ever will. More
