Product Information

  • The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Ratings & Reviews

  • Better, but still not good engineering

    2.0 out of 5 stars

I thought the magnetic connection would solve the problem with my previous Powerbook cord fraying. It didn't. 18 months, and I'm h aving to wiggle the cord around to get power. Of course, Apple will sell me another one for $79, when my problem is that $1 worth of wire broke.

Here's an idea: why not make the portion of the cable that attaches to the transformer detachable? Then when the connector frays, as it inevitably will, you could buy a $10 cord instead of paying $79 for the whole power adapter. But I guess that would eliminate a big source of profit for Apple.

  • Yes for Unibody, No for older MBP's

    2.0 out of 5 stars

Own Early 2008 MBP and Late 2009 MBP.
Works on the unibody, does not on my early 2008.
The port on the new MacBooks are smaller and more shallow, this charger reflects this change and will not make contact with older ports found on non-unibody.
Buyer beware, save yourself the hassle and find an 'I" MagSafe charger if you have a non-unibody.

  • Finally a great charger!

    5.0 out of 5 stars

I had the old macbook pro (2009) that came with the old charger. I've never had problems with the charger at all other then if I were to use it on my lap then the charger would be disconnected from the computer. With this charger that is no longer the case.

I now have the new macbook pro and it came with the new charger and there isn't anything bad i can say about it so far. If you're looking for a charger that will work with the macbook and macbook pro this is the best choice. Somehow the charger can regulate down the amount of charge it's putting through to the computer so it's able to be used for both models. The overall look of this charger is pretty amazing. Before having a cheap looking white plug going into a all aluminum macbook looked stupid. With the new aluminum magsafe plug it looks a lot better when plugged in.

Overall i think this is a great upgrade for anyone looking for a new charger and for anyone who has had problems with the old model.

  • Chargers are problematic

    1.0 out of 5 stars

I have had my MacBook Pro four years now and am on my third charger. The factory supplied charger and the second charger both had broken wires. The Genius Bar told me that it was because I was wrapping the cord too tight. I always used the ears on the charger to wrap the cord, nothing abnormal. This design flaw has cost me $160 thus far. I love my Mac but something needs to be done with the chargers.

  • Lasted for one year

    2.0 out of 5 stars

After 1 year and couple months of using the power adaptor (L-connector for MacBook Pro early 2012) the cord melted and wires insid e it were broken. Well... I was disappointed and expected better quality from Apple. I brought it to Genius bar in Apple Store and they replaced it for free. They have a special program for that.

  • Awful Charger

    1.0 out of 5 stars

Mac chargers are very expensive and break so easily! The wires feeding into the computer clip are ultra prone to getting damaged. I have replaced my cord several times with several models and no matter how careful I am, it's life span is woefully disappointing. For the price, it should be far better. At the very least you should be able to replace only the section prone to damage and not the whole cord!
