Time Capsule - 1 TB
Great...except for the short lifespan
Written by SG from Costa Mesa

I loved the function, wireless ease of use and simplicity, at least when it worked. Alas, mine died after approximately 18 months of service. Not what I'd consider acceptable for something you'd expect to be heavy-duty since it's advertised as having a "server-grade" hard drive.
C'mon Apple, we expect better. …More538 of 619 people found this useful

Set up with Verizon FIOS - No problem!
Written by MA from Stoneham
Nov 25, 2009
Three things were holding me back on this purchase 1) the much reported overheating of vintage 2008 TCs 2) will it work well with Verizon FIOS wireless router 3) price. I am putting my faith in Apple on the overheating issue since the new model TC has not been out long enough to know for sure. Hard to believe they wouldn't fix a known problem from a previous gen product. The initial set up was super easy, pretty much plug and play. The only configuration change on the FIOS router was to turn off the wireless feature. This step is a piece of cake as long as you know your router i.p., User ID and Password. Be sure to select 'create a new network' and not 'bridge' mode when going through TC software set up. Otherwise you may lose some TC functionality. Also, follow set up guide and hard wire TC to computer for the initial Time Machine back up. My wireless network was pretty fast before (802.11G) and I am really amazed that it is now blazing fast and the wireless range has increased substantially as well. Given drop in external HD costs, the product is a little pricey but for me not having to be on the phone with support for hours on end is well worth the extra cost. …More

I just got the new Time Capsule 1TB. it works flawlessly... and i dont kno what people are talking about it getting hot... i backed up over 100gb all at once and it only got warm... just like any harddrive would and like every TB external i ever had... i actually had a maxtor which felt like it was on fire compared to this one. Im very impressed. and the network speeds are extreamly fast. i cannont complain at all.. i also hooked up my canon MP620 to it and it made it work wirelessly without a problem (which if people who run Snow Leapord and have that printer can tell u, making it wireless is a complete hassle, because the lack of drivers and such.) but with this it hooked up wirelessly in less than 5 min. i love it. …More

Awesome

I have had my time machine for a few months now and it is amazing. It works exactly as advertised. In fact, my internet connection sped up once I started using it. Way better then my Linksys router and being able to print from any computer in the house without having to buy a wireless printer is a great bonus. I have and will continue to recommend this product to everyone I know. …More

I see units are failing after 18 months. How long is the Time Capsule warranty? (I'd hope at least 3 years.)

If you are using the Time Capsule with a computer that's covered under AppleCare, the Time Capsule is covered. Note that they do NOT have to be on the same receipt. From the AppleCare Protection Plan terms & conditions:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, an AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, an Apple-branded DVI to ADC display adapter, Apple RAM modules and MacBook Air SuperDrive are also covered under APP if owned by you and used with the Covered Equipment."
Also, from Apple's page advertising the plan:
"An AirPort Extreme Card, AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station, Time Capsule, MacBook Air SuperDrive, and Apple RAM when used with a Mac covered by the AppleCare Protection Plan"
Note that I (and others) have verified this in practice - I am getting my dead 18-month old Time Capsule replaced under the APP on my MacBook pro. …More- Answered by RG from Portland

What is the average life span of 2TB time capsule? Do you lose access to your data if your Mac fails and you have to get a new computer??

Mine lasted 19 months and many others are reporting a similar lifespan.
After that if you're not up to disassembling it and putting the hard disk in an external enclosure, there is no other way to access your data. But the failure has to do with the internal power supply. So your data stays in the hard drive. …More- Answered by JA from west hollywood

So can this replace my wireless modem to allow my Internet and printers to be used on a wireless home network? I'm on a 24" iMac.

It will replace the wireless part, but you will still need a modem for your cable or DSL. Many DSL modems have it's own router built in, this moves your Apple router one step away from the actual internet. This disables certain features that require a direct connection to the internet such as Back to my Mac.
If you do have two routers you will get a Double NAT error in Airport Utility and a flashing amber light on the Apple router. If your internet provider can't help you turn off the router in your modem they may be able to replace the router/modem they sent you with just a modem. I had to explain what I was trying to do to get them to replace it. If they can't replace it and you want to, or have to, stay with this provider you can set the Apple product to Bridge Mode where you're passed through directly to your ISP's router so services like iChat can connect to the destination directly. …More- Answered by RS from Alameda
