    The Curse of the Gloss

Why, O why does apple keep tormenting designers with these awesome displays with glossy screen? Designers and photographers thrive on detail. We need to be able to detect the slimmest of value shifts and for this reason alone I have to rate this as a 3 star product. While working on these glossy screens I find my self shadow boxing with my own reflection as I shift and dodge to see past the glare into what I am looking at.

This is an awesome monitor, but unless your ambient lighting conditions are perfect it causes pain and irritation. I love that it seamlessly links to my macbook pro and the size is just perfect. But the glare, I hate the glare!

Give us an antiglare option please!

Nice display but glossy reflections make it unusable for me
    • Written by WK from Louisville

Apple has become so enamored of glossy displays that they've forgotten that in many home and office environments the glossy surface renders them a mirror, making the whole point of owning such a large, beautiful display moot.

So unless you mind working in very indirect light or with the lights turned way down low, try and find yourself a store that still has a 30" Cinema Display in stock, or hope that as they did with the MacBook Pros, they eventually realize there are a lot of users who still require an anti-glare display.

I gave it two stars because if you CAN minimize reflection from ambient light, it really IS a good looking display.

Glossy mirror and lack of inputs

If you don't want to use plastics for environmental reasons Apple, there are glare-free glass options out there too. This is a giant mirror unless you have the perfect lighting conditions. Really fatiguing over the course of a day to continually have to force your focus from all the reflections.

And no HDMI either? This thing is the size of a TV, and I would like it to serve as one when I am not using it as a computer monitor. Would love to be able to plug in a blu-ray or my HD Receiver into this thing too. Would be acceptable if Apple supported blu-ray in its Mac line. Unfortunately, the Dell Ultra-Sharp has to complement my Mac this time around. A travesty. But it is matt, with tons of inputs.

Good on Paper - Bad in real life

I own a web business and am in front of a screen for 16+ hours/day. I decided to go "all in" on Apple and am using a MBA 11" with the T-bolt 27" display, in addition to the iMac, 2 MBP's and Time Capsule, AppleTV, Airplay, iPad, etc. Hardware works together flawlessly which is why you buy Apple. It never occurred to me I'd have problems...

Although I LOVE the plug & play with the MBA 11, crisp image, sound, etc., I HATE the fact it makes 11 pt. font look like 6 pt. font. And the headaches have become unbearable. I've tried apps (flux, sunvisor), font smoothing, brightness, etc. It is too much to take and I'm thinking about dumping it. I don't have reflection problems that I notice - i can see the screen fine and don't focus on seeing myself or background. But the pain is brutal.

What am I missing? Am I the only one? Is it possibly the MBA causing these problems on the Tbolt 27? Apple store guys are clueless.

    Creative Professional? Avoid this product!

After some hesitation I gave this product a go -- My 23" cinema display seemed old and ready for an upgrade. After 10 days of forcing myself to get used to the gloss working in Photoshop and coping with the headaches -- I just couldn't anymore and went back to my trusty matte cinema. After 20 years of buying every Apple product, this is the first time where I was truly disappointed. More

Great. But it should be Insanely Great. Let me explain...

I don't get it, I really don't. In a world of Airplay, Wifi and Bluetooth 4.0 why in the heck do I *need* to plug this friggin thing into a computer? Sure the sound is good. Yeah the pictures great. HD FaceTime... I'm tickled pink. But come on Apple don't stifle your own products. Allow us to throw our slideshow up on the monitor wirelessly. Allow the speakers to be used in conjunction with iTunes and airplay from any device. iOS included. Throw us a 21st Century bone here. Bob Mansfield. I'm looking at you. Lets do something about this guys. It could be killer. Instead its dead on arrival. More

No. I've spent the past two days looking for a solution. I expected my ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card to drive video to my new Thunderbolt Display though the mini Display Port connector. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Very frustrated. More

  • This looks great! Does this work with PCs?

This does work fine with a PC. You must either use a converter adaptor (over $100) or use one of the few PC cards with a mini displayport like the ATI 5970. Also, depending on your hardware some people have trouble getting boot camp to install into windows properly on a PC. You must use boot camp to control the brightness on this monitor, or hook it to a mac and set the brightness first. The monitor will remember whatever the last brightness setting was used if you use the mac option. Also, be aware the brightness, sound, and isight camera all utilize the usb port. I should also mention, the isight camera and sound work fine on my pc. More

You most definitely can. You can set any external monitor to be the primary and only monitor for your MacBook Pro. Once it is connected via Mini DisplayPort and properly configured, you must close the lid and do one of three things:

    1. Click a paired bluetooth mouse such as the Magic Mouse to wake it.
    2. Stroke a key on a paired bluetooth keyboard to wake it.
    3. Open and close the lid in one motion.

I'm always traveling, using bigger external monitors as my only display. I'll just hook it up, open and close the lid, and the screen will properly activate.

    Hope that helps, friend.
