Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.
Use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect your Mac to a standard analog monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a VGA connector or cable. Review the documentation or check with the manufacturer of your monitor to make sure you're choosing the right adapter.

Doesn't work with Samsung TV

I bought a new MacBook last week and got the VGA adapter so I could use it with my TV as I did my old PowerBook G4 (via the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter). The new adapter worked fine when I connected it to an overhead projector, but it doesn't seem to send a readable signal to my Samsung LN40A650 television.
I tried booting in to Windows via Boot Camp and got the same result.
I guess I'll have to try the DVI adapter with a converter from DVI to HDMI to use this with my TV. A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (or even regular DisplayPort, which can be directly converted without using audio) would be ideal, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of that. …

Computer to Projector Works Great!

Needed to connect to an old Epson VGA proje The new Mac Book Pro Retina model has no DVI connection, as my older Mac Book Pro did. Needed to connect to an old Epson VGA projector. Made an appointment for the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store. They showed me how to connect to any VGA device by using the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. It was not apparent to me at first, that the Mini Display plug fit in the Lightning connector on the computer, but it does. The computer was already set up (default) to mirror the display, The Apple Store brought out a VGA display and it immediately mirrored the computer when plugged in. At home the Epson recognized the signal immediately and projected it on screen. It's a winner! This is all you need. Of course you still require your male to male VGA cable which is Blue to Blue and Apple considered this and made their VGA end on this adapter, Blue also.
You should already know this, but to repeat; VGA is Video Signal only. There is no audio signal in VGA.
On with the show! …
