Overview

Every Mac with a Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect an external display or projector using an adapter. You can use an external display as your main workspace or to extend your desktop, or you can work in mirrored mode with a projector so you can view what your audience sees.

Use the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter to connect your Mac to a standard analog monitor, projector, or LCD that uses a VGA connector or cable. Review the documentation or check with the manufacturer of your monitor to make sure you're choosing the right adapter.

Compatible only with Mac computers with Mini DisplayPort.

    Doesn't work with Samsung TV

I'm very disappointed with this. I bought a new MacBook last week and got the VGA adapter so I could use it with my TV as I did my old PowerBook G4 (via the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter). The new adapter worked fine when I connected it to an overhead projector, but it doesn't seem to send a readable signal to my Samsung LN40A650 television.

I tried booting in to Windows via Boot Camp and got the same result.

I guess I'll have to try the DVI adapter with a converter from DVI to HDMI to use this with my TV. A Mini DisplayPort to HDMI (or even regular DisplayPort, which can be directly converted without using audio) would be ideal, but there doesn't seem to be any sign of that.

Output to my 22" Viewsonic is clear and crisp and setup with no effort. Seems to be of the same quality as the mini DVI to VGA adapter which I used everyday for a year with out incident on my old macbook. Should be priced in the 14.99 - 19.99 range. More

I can not get this thing to output to my Samsung LN-4042H 40 inch LCD. The old miniDVI to VGA worked no problem with my old MacBook. I have checked and it is not a TV problem, so certainly something hardware or driver related. Also $29.99 for a video dongle seems steep to me. More

I work as a tech at a university and we have these small adapters connected to iMAC's, mac mini's and Laptops... these adapters give out on a regular basis. It's a HUGE waste of money to purchase a mass load of replacements... unfortunately it's the only choice we have. EXTREMELY disappointed in this product. More

    Display Adapter Mis-Use

There seems to be confusion about the Apple VGA adapter that changes from the video port to VGA. In general TV's cannot be run on this connection. Computer monitors are not not like TV's as far as signal type and pin-outs go. This adapter was meant to connect to another analog computer monitor or similar device like a projector, not a connection to a digital TV. Some of the newer LCD TV's have the electronics to do both TV and VGA computer type displays. I won't get any more Technical than that. Apple should give more detail about how and when to use this adapter. More

That depends on your computer and your TV. If you have a new MacBook Pro with DisplayPort output and your Sony TV has VGA and HDMI inputs like mine, you could use this mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter with a male-to-male VGA cable, or you could use a mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter with a DVI to HDMI adapter cable. The DVI solution is preferable because the mini DisplayPort to DVI is digital while VGA is analog. More

    Short answer: yes.
Long answer: yes, because the Thunderbolt standard is based on Mini-DisplayPort; so any cable that will work with the previous Mini-DisplayPort standard should work with Thunderbolt. More

I hate to go against someone else's answer, but I have a 13" MacBook Pro (early 2011), and it does have Thunderbolt. All 2011 and later MacBook Pro's have Thunderbolt and all 2011 and later MacBook Air's have thunderbolt. If you have Thunderbolt, you can daisy chain you monitors together, like mentioned in the other answer. The Apple Thunderbolt Display is good for this, although a bit pricy ($999). More
