    Flaky performance

    Written by AP from Phoenix

I had to plug and unplug my monitor several times before it worked and even now the monitor won't wake up from sleep! Sometimes when it does come up it flickers and has jaggies. I have to unplug the DVI and plug it back in to get it to stop. I never had any issues at all with this monitor on my old MBP. The size of this thing it HUGE, I can't believe they couldn't make it smaller. Literally about 3x4 inches! Feels like they released a poor product AND they did it LATE! More

    Flicker, sporadic issues...

    Written by AI from BOSTON

    Dec 22, 2008

    Major issues...

First, when I plugged it into my brand new 2008 Macbook Pro I got a message saying that the USB device drew too much power! I did manage to make it work by plugging it into my monitor's USB hub, but wow...

Secondly, there is a slight flicker. You can see it clearly with certain kinds of backgrounds and fill patterns. It almost looks like the kind of noise you get with analog, except it's DVI. It's not a severe problem, but *any* flicker with DVI is ridiculous.

Finally, sometimes it just fails. The screen will go all weird, and you have to reset it. Again, it looks like an analog failure mode except it's not...

I'm going to wait a bit and then trying exchanging my adaptor at the Apple store. Maybe there are issues with the first-run units.

Apple really botched this one. Dongles are bad enough, but overpriced broken ones... come on guys...

    Works with my 30 inch

I just receive it and it works at full resolution with my 30 in Apple Cinema Display with both my new Mac Mini and new Macbook Pro. I thought there may be a flicker problem with the MBP because I saw flickers when I first plugged it in but they went away after the computer came on. More

    It works!

    Written by DD from VEENDAM

    Nov 18, 2009

With some apprehension I ordered this adapter for connecting my recently acquired Mac mini (2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive, double-layer SuperDrive, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics, Mac OS X Snow Leopard) to my 30" Apple Cinema display.

It worked immediately, which is essential because the Mac mini is in fact my spare computer for getting on should my main computer, an early 2008 Mac Pro, break down.

Normally, the Cinema screen is connected to my Mac Pro (early 2008 model, now running under Snow Leopard), and the Mac mini is connected as a target disk via FireWire800 for cloning the Mac Pro hard disk to the Mac Mini hard disk.

Possibly doesn't like ground lifts? Whatever, it's a TERRIBLE product.

    Written by JC from Londonderry

I used this product to connect my 17" MacBook Pro to my 50" plasma. Shouldn't have been much of a stretch for it as the resolution of a plasma is only 1920x1080. The results quite literally looked like my MBP was on a bad acid trip with cyclical pulsating anywhere in the image with a brighter luminance. I did not have anything plugged into the adapter's USB extender and the MBP was getting DC power from its adapter (not running off of the battery).

I have a sneaking suspicion that this product doesn't like ground lifts (although after just reading a bunch of other reviews (wish I had done that before visiting the Apple store) it's possible that perhaps it just globally bites and maybe someone in Apple's quality assurance department ought to be fired (or at the very least attend a class on black box and white box testing)). Like most apartments in the Boston area, the one I'm in has no discrete 3rd prong for ground so you must use a ground lift. If that's a requirement of this product it's pretty unrealistic, at least for those of us who live in older cities. FWIW I know it's not the display as my 13" MacBook from 2006 is able to drive my plasma just fine with a mini DVI to a DVI adapter (and from there I use a DVI to HDMI cable).

Totally possible. I am running my new 13" macbook pro into my Samsung 42" HDTV using the mini display port adapter, and a DVI to HDMI cable I bought an apple keyboard w/number pad, hooked up my Logitech MX Revolution wireless mouse.....whallah....42" of Mac. Works absolutely fantastic.

For those of you who want to do this with a macbook......start with the TV off, I open the Macbook press the power button, then immediately close it all the way. Next turn on the TV. and you should be set. I use my laptop as a "desktop" literally everyday. When I do need to go somewhere however, I pull a few wires and walk out the door. The nice thing is, that i am not wearing out the keyboard and the laptop screen when i am hooked up to the flatscreen tv. the life of my macbook LCD screen will be extended ten fold.

    Hope this helped.

I do not own a mac mini but I have seen this done many times in retail stores that want to show off the versatility of such a small desktop. The mac mini has two video outputs: a mini-display port and a mini-DVI port. The mini-display port is the same one you find on the current generation macbook, macbook pros (as well as the Mac Pro) and the Mini-DVI is the same as the on the old black/white macbook. I do not know why apple decided to go with two different adapter types but it works just the same as you will need two separate adapters to use two displays anyway. From there, you just buy two "dongles" (display adapters) which hook up to your respective screen input jacks (VGA or DVI) and you're set! More
