Overview

    DVI drops Analog signal, DVI-D only

    We know the Mini DisplayPort can output an analog signal because there's a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. So why does this adapter drop the analog signal and go strictly to DVI-D (Digital only) instead of DVI-I (analog & digital)? The old MacBook Pro's had DVI-I. So this adapter is not a replacement to what used to come standard on MacBook Pros! I'm left very frustrated. …More

    DVI-D Single Link (Digital only, 1920x1200@60Hz)

    This is the Mini-DisplayPort to DVI-D single-link adapter.

    DVI-D single-link means that ONLY DIGITAL signals will be output, with the maximum supported resolution at 60Hz being 1920x1200 (2.75 megapixels to be exact).

    The adapter easily plugs into the Mini-DisplayPort jack of new aluminum unibody Macbooks and Macbook Pros, and the other end is female DVI-D. Be aware that you cannot physically fit your DVI-I cables into the DVI-D female end. However, since all 24 pins are open, DVI-D dual-link cables can physically fit just as well as DVI-D single-link cables, and can be used to carry the SINGLE-LINK signal to your TV or monitor.

    I was surprised how light-weight this adapter is; a plus for carrying around. I was worried that the relatively heavier cables would pull the plug out from the notebook, but the adapter fits quite snugly in the Macbook Pro. The two screws on the DVI cable I used could not reach their holes in the adapter (female end is not deep enough), however, it was not a concern since the cable still fit tightly into the adapter.

    So, if you don’t have a DIGITAL display larger than 1920x1200, this adapter will be fine. Since HDTV is 1920x1080 this adapter is good enough for me. If you are looking to drive larger digital displays, get the dual-link adapter instead. Also, remember that analog is not supported with this adapter.     …More

    This is a DVI-D (single-link) connector - look up DVI on Wikipedia, if you're not sure of the difference. You can NOT simply connect to a DVI-I connector, like Apple's own DVI-VGA adapter, because of the extra pins in DVI-I.

    This is an Apple product and I am an Apple evangelist and have been for many years. Imagine my disappointment when something as simple as an adapter doesn't. What's the problem? That's even more disappointing - it doesn't make a secure connection between my Cintiq and the adapter. On any DVI female connection, there is a slot for the "blade" pin to go into; with two regular pins above and below it. On our Apple version, the holes above and below are simply too small to accept those pins.

    It just doesn't fit. From a company that engineers it's laptops from solid blocks of aluminum, I'd expect a little better. If I could give this zero stars, I would - a complete waste.     …More

    Connection is not solid; picture snows or blacks out.

    I am using this with a late 2008 MacBook (aluminum).

    Bought two adapters. First one was awful. I connected the cord to the adapter with varying degrees of snugness. No matter what I tried, it would not maintain a connection. The screen (Samsung SyncMaster) was either black, snow, or worse and equally often, it would would just constantly flicker/sorta oscillate between my desktop and snow (many times per second). There was no consistent pattern to get it to maintain a picture (I mean, I tried to wiggle the adapter), which meant that it wasn't the actual mini-display port for which I was having the problem, and that it was the DVI side of the dongle that was having issues. Sometimes I would get lucky, and it would hold a picture for 10 minutes (this happened twice). I wasted four hours on this defective product. I tried switching the DVI monitor cables, but the situation was consistent (and for the past year, the cables have worked and are working just just fine connecting the monitors to the desktop PCs).

    Next, I bought another adapter. This worked much better for the most, but it is still not perfect. I've only used the new one for a day, but I am very concerned that it will last, and that it will soon regress to the defective performance of the first adapter that I bought. Once during the day when the new adapter shifted, I did lose the picture on my monitor. That's how I know things are not perfect.

    Doesn't work with a perfecty fine Samsung monitor

    I had read all the reviews on the Apple Store before buying this adapter. Turns out, it doesn't work with my SyncMaster 940bw, even with a brand new DVI-D cable...
    I have had it with Apple...Not only does this adapter is too expensive, but also it simply do not do the job.
