The Apple Micro-DVI to DVI adapter was designed specifically to fit the slim profile of MacBook Air. This is ONLY for MICRO-DVI sockets on MB-AIR! Not the Mini-DVI ones on most other Mac products...

This product fits DVI-D connectors, but not the DVI-I or DVI-A connectors. This will always work with Apple products, sure, but my Wacom Cintiq 21UX has a DVI-I output so I'm currently looking at buying an extension cable and pulling some pins out. I bought this only to find out it does not support analog signals via DVI. So you cannot plug your existing DVI to VGA adaptor on to it but you need to buy a separate micro-DVI to VGA adapter. …More

I use this adapter to connect to my MacBook Air to my HDTV, and it works magnificently.
DVI-D only! This does not support DVI-I or DVI-A, because it is designed only for the MacBook Air, which only supports digital out. If your device only has an analog input, DVI, VGA or otherwise, you will need a different adapter. …More16 of 17 people found this useful

Generally not. Look under the Apple in the upper left of your screen, then go to System Preferences > Display > Arrangement to decide how you're wish to use the monitor.
