When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.
Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.
This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.
Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

My mag connector cord melted as well and became unusable. Apple stores have none available and the on=line info indicates 6 or more weeks delivery. Apple really needs to address this issue. …More

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Meltdown after 9 months
Written by JT from Grosse Pointe Park

I am and have been very protective of all parts of my MacBook Pro, but recently the junction of the MagSafe tip and the cord to the main power unit has begun to melt and fray. This has rendered my MacBook Pro nearly unusable, as I have no way to charge it.
I hope this unit has been redesigned to safely carry the 85w of power without destroying the unit. …More2513 of 3282 people found this useful

AC adapter meltdown

Hmmm...the computer is 15 months old and exactly 13 months in use. Tender, loving care has been provided, and the adapter never leaves the house.....however, base connecting point of the AC adapter's nifty magnetic head just started to smell of melted rubber; now it is looking melted and i can see the wires inside! Sure enough it will stop working shortly! Should i buy a new one? sigh. …More

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
What's with the vendetta?
Written by TH from Chelsea

For those reading interested in buying either this or a Mac notebook, please remember some statistics.
First, it's very likely that people with power adapter problems will come here to vent about it and seek some kind of closure for their loss. Perfectly natural.
Meanwhile, who in their right mind is coming to this page to give a 5 star review for a power adapter that works perfectly fine for them? I'll tell you who: Me. And just me. It's a power adapter. You're not supposed to have to think about it, you're not supposed to love it more than your wife, and you're not supposed to review it.
Statistical bias and self selection are the reason for the low reviews, plain and simple. Some of these power adapters may have issues, but remember that it's not necessarily the majority, or relevant to your buying decision.
I absolutely love these things. I've used them on my macs for years, and I've never seen a problem, nor have any of my mac-using friends before me, nor have any of the people I've converted to using mac. They've worked perfectly, they're amazingly interchangeable and standard between macs (it's awesome never having to worry too much about power adapters when you know you're going to a mac-filled office or home) and they have, and will continue to, save my computer from certain falling death because of the magnetic design. And in all my years of experience, they work perfectly and have never broken, overheated, or even barely shown signs of wear. Lovely.
So don't get caught up in the reviews. They're statistically irrelevant. Sorry guys. …More22 of 25 people found this useful

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Disappointing, indicative of being an afterthought
Written by CT from BENTON

I have a MacBook Pro 17" and a MacBook Pro 13". Eight months ago, I bought a new power adapter so that I could leave my main brick at my "docking" station. Eight months later, that adapter simply stopped working. The good news is that I still have two working bricks, and neither has yet frayed, but I'm shocked that Apple has let such a poor product drag down the customer experience.
When a company gets so many things right, it's shocking when a fundamental component is a glaring and obvious Achilles heel. It's a real shame. …More4 of 5 people found this useful

What power cord adapter can we use for both a 13" Macbook and a 17" Macbook Pro?
- Asked by KP from SAINT LOUIS PARK

You can use a 85w adapter for both, because the MacBook can have the voltage regulated from 85w down to 60 for it to be compatible. You can NOT use the 60w on the MacBook pro. So just get the 85w for both. :) …More

This charger is for the 13" MacBook/MacBook Pro, *not* the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros which use an 85W adapter. While you can use the 85W adapter on a 13" MacBook/Pro, you cannot use the 60W adapter on the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros. …More

Is the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter dual voltage?
- Asked by KP from NEW YORK
- Oct 7, 2009
Best Answer
You will need a different attachment (but *not* a voltage converter) similar to the "duck prong" (2-prong plug) in the item's picture.
The easiest way to do this is to buy the "Apple World Travel Adapter Kit". This contains all the adapters you should ever need.
Just take off the two prong plug and snap on the adapter. …More- Answered by RH from Star City
