When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.
Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.
This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.
Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

My mag connector cord melted as well and became unusable. Apple stores have none available and the on=line info indicates 6 or more weeks delivery. Apple really needs to address this issue. …More

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Meltdown after 9 months
Written by JT from Grosse Pointe Park

I am and have been very protective of all parts of my MacBook Pro, but recently the junction of the MagSafe tip and the cord to the main power unit has begun to melt and fray. This has rendered my MacBook Pro nearly unusable, as I have no way to charge it.
I hope this unit has been redesigned to safely carry the 85w of power without destroying the unit. …More2503 of 3268 people found this useful

AC adapter meltdown
Written by EC from New York

Hmmm...the computer is 15 months old and exactly 13 months in use. Tender, loving care has been provided, and the adapter never leaves the house.....however, base connecting point of the AC adapter's nifty magnetic head just started to smell of melted rubber; now it is looking melted and i can see the wires inside! Sure enough it will stop working shortly! Should i buy a new one? sigh. …More

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Built to break?
Written by VL from SAINT CHARLES
Dec 3, 2009
I've had my Macbook Pro for a few months and the Magsafe Adapter is tearing itself apart. It is great that it keeps my laptop safe from getting yanked off the table, but I can't help but feel this thing is built to break. In order to wind the cable around the L shaped supports as neatly as described and shown in all the product pictures, you have to wind it perfectly tight. Doing this, however, puts the cable under constant stress which, coupled with the heat, causes the connection to the power box to come loose and expose bare wire. I am shocked now to find that it costs so much to replace, and that I am unlikely to qualify for a replacement due to unrelated accidental damage. …More

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
they need to reinforce this design STAT

I have had this same charger break on me twice now, and they are not cheap. The end that plugs into the computer WILL break and expose the wires. Does not matter how careful you are with them. I really hope they come up with a new design for this. They are lucky i gave it one star, only because i haven't had any other kind of problems with it. Again, though...This is the second charger that has broken in 1 year. …More

Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)
Apple's Worst Product Award goes to the MagSafe Power Adapter.
Written by MC from Rancho Cordova
Dec 1, 2009
Beginning one month after ownership of the adapter it would occasionally not charge the computer, and after three months it failed completely.
Apple Care replaced it; However, the new one has wires that are one by one becoming disconnected from the MagSafe connector, and they are exposed about a quarter inch now. The wire jacket is becoming loose on the adapter end as well. This all happened in five months.
Both adapters became dangerously hot, so when I use the extender I have to make sure it's resting on something fairly heat resistance to prevent damage. This excessive heat buildup shows a poor transfer of energy. In other words you're wasting money paying the electric company for lots of heat that should have charged your computer. That's neither economically efficient or green.
I think that $80 is an absurd price to pay for this adapter. Especially for how it performs. Apple needs to address this issue before I will recommend their computers to anyone. …More14 of 14 people found this useful

What power cord adapter can we use for both a 13" Macbook and a 17" Macbook Pro?
- Asked by KP from SAINT LOUIS PARK

You can use a 85w adapter for both, because the MacBook can have the voltage regulated from 85w down to 60 for it to be compatible. You can NOT use the 60w on the MacBook pro. So just get the 85w for both. :) …More

This charger is for the 13" MacBook/MacBook Pro, *not* the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros which use an 85W adapter. While you can use the 85W adapter on a 13" MacBook/Pro, you cannot use the 60W adapter on the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros. …More

Is the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter dual voltage?
- Asked by KP from NEW YORK
- Oct 7, 2009
Best Answer
You will need a different attachment (but *not* a voltage converter) similar to the "duck prong" (2-prong plug) in the item's picture.
The easiest way to do this is to buy the "Apple World Travel Adapter Kit". This contains all the adapters you should ever need.
Just take off the two prong plug and snap on the adapter. …More- Answered by RH from Star City
