When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.
Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.
This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
How about splicing to repair?
Written by AV from Belle Mead
Aug 26, 2007
I, like the others before me, have experienced a failure of the connection at the junction where the cord leads into the magnetic brick. I can no longer charge my computer until I purchase and receive an entire new unit which according to the order says will take 7-10 days. I cannot understand why the bad part of the cord cannot be cut off and reconnected much like when a lamp cord needs to be spliced onto a new plug. Since the wait time to receive a new power cord (and mind you I have to buy the whole thing even though the rest of mine seems perfectly fine)is quite a number of days, this leads me into thinking that others may also be having a similar problem with failure of this unit and are also having to purchase enitre new ones.
Apple needs to figure out a way to REPAIR the connection instead of creating a lot unnecessary extra parts that may not be needed by most of us to solve the connectivity issue.
On my previous ibook I also had a failure of the power cord in the same area.
I am not careless and have taken measures not to bend that area to eliminate excessive stress, but to no avail. I have wrapped it with electrical cord to strengthen it, too.
I hate to compare, but my daughter has a Dell Inspiron
that is about 4 years old. The connection at the plug is thicker and has some flexor loops in it. It is sturdier and I can assure you it has received many hours of use with no signs of wear.
Its time for Apple to go green with this issue and REPAIR the connection rather than expecting its customers to replace the entire thing. …More3642 of 4119 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Buy the 85 watt MacBook Pro model
Written by JO from Tacoma
Aug 5, 2006
The 60W original equipment power adapter for the Macbook is fine and works as it should. However, if you are buying a spare, why not get the 85W MB Pro model. It is the same price and it seems to stay noticeably cooler when charging the Macbook. I have both computers and the 85W will work for either.
The 60W works only on a limited basis with a Macbook Pro. It will provide enough power to run the computer, but doesn't have enough reserve to charge the battery unless you put the MBP to sleep or shut down. This is actually better than I would have expected. …More2923 of 3399 people found this useful

MagSafe Tips
Written by DM from Hamilton
Nov 6, 2006
I've enjoyed the MagSafe adapter with my MacBook immensely, a far superior design than previous adapters.
I'm not sure about the other people who wrote reviews, but let me share a few tips to help you with your MagSafe power adapter, and keep it from excessive damage.
1) Don't just yank the MagSafe from the charging socket on the side of your MacBook (Pro). Place your fingers on the small white plug end such that you can gently pull up on it. It will come away from the socket easily, and this won't cause you cord damage down the road.
*The MagSafe was meant to save your computer from an occassion where a quick 'whip' from a tripped over or stuck cord would knock the computer from it's place.
If you constantly yank the cord from the socket, you're simulating the same effect as above. I don't think it was designed for hundreds of yanks, but rather for the few times it will happen inintentionally.
2) Do not plug it into your computer before you plug the adapter into the wall socket. Sparks and other electricity-related activity could potentially damage your computer.
Observe these steps and you won't end up like the others on here. …More2262 of 3346 people found this useful

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
old design horrible....
Written by CL from Philadelphia
Dec 22, 2009
the original design is very flawed bc the cord bends right at the magnet connection-point. this is also where it tends to get pretty hot. needless to say, after having my macbook for 2 years the cord finally broke right there (white coating 'melted' off and the electrical wires frayed). attempted to wrap with electrical tape, and that worked for about a week, when finally no matter how i bent the cord it wouldn't charge my macbook. so i bought another charger, and i was surprised to see that it looked very different from the old one. instead of the wire sticking out perpendicular to the magnet piece, the cord comes out parallel, so that it can't bend at the connection point. i like it so far, and i can finally use my macbook again! …More

Apple 60W MagSafe Power Adapter (for MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro)
Horrible design!
Written by TH
Dec 20, 2009
I have owned my 13-inch, white Macbook for over two years now and have already gone through two of these power adapters. 9 months or so after I bought this computer, I began experiencing problems with my first adapter. First the orange and green indicator lights were unresponsive or would not illuminate at all when plugged into the computer. Sometimes they would light up, but then when the computer was slightly moved (i.e. from the table to my lap), the LED lights would turn off. Then the situation worsened as the power adapter failed to charge. After careful jiggling, I could oftentimes get it to start charging, but then after a few minutes or especially after a movement described above, the connection would be lost and the computer would revert to battery power. Eventually I decided enough is enough and I shelled out the ~$80 to get a new adapter which worked beautifully for the first few months. But recently, I have begun experiencing similar problems yet again. The indicator lights do not illuminate or don't respond properly (i.e. green when battery power is 90% or when computer says it is in fact charging so it should be orange). And now I am having the exact problems as before with the adapter struggling to connect with the computer and administer a charge. When moving my computer from the table to my lap or vice versa, the adapter will often drop the connection and I will have to revert to more jiggling...
I have a feeling the problem is in the magnetic brick but I'm not certain. I'm wondering if perhaps the magnet surrounding the five, small power connectors is not firmly in place and it manages to slip forward when the adapter is removed. Then when it is plugged back in, the magnet on the power adapter moves forward to meet the magnet in the computer, thus making it difficult for the five connector lines on the adapter and computer to complete a connection.
Anyways, it is an interesting product with innovative design but unfortunately these small problems make it a huge hassle for the user. Apple, please respond to this issue asap! …More7 of 8 people found this useful

What power cord adapter can we use for both a 13" Macbook and a 17" Macbook Pro?
- Asked by KP from SAINT LOUIS PARK

You can use a 85w adapter for both, because the MacBook can have the voltage regulated from 85w down to 60 for it to be compatible. You can NOT use the 60w on the MacBook pro. So just get the 85w for both. :) …More

This charger is for the 13" MacBook/MacBook Pro, *not* the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros which use an 85W adapter. While you can use the 85W adapter on a 13" MacBook/Pro, you cannot use the 60W adapter on the 15" or 17" MacBook Pros. …More

Is the 60W MagSafe Power Adapter dual voltage?
- Asked by KP from NEW YORK
- Oct 7, 2009
Best Answer
You will need a different attachment (but *not* a voltage converter) similar to the "duck prong" (2-prong plug) in the item's picture.
The easiest way to do this is to buy the "Apple World Travel Adapter Kit". This contains all the adapters you should ever need.
Just take off the two prong plug and snap on the adapter. …More- Answered by RH from Star City
