The effective life cycle with other rechargeable battery systems I have used seems to be about the same.
I was concerned about additional damage or safety hazard so I removed the battery. I called Apple Support and they agreed without dispute to send a replacement under warranty at no charge. Apple is still the best overall computer experience I have had!

The reason it last me over 5 years is it spent most of its time on my desk, plugged in WITHOUT THE BATTERY, the battery would only be used in the laptop when traveling. I realize this IS a design flaw, however Id rather deal with this problem than no longer having an 17" MBP available anymore. Dear APPLE, Its been 8 years with this one, id buy a new 17" if you'd market one. …

The unplugged battery life was 3 1/2 to 4 hours for several years, and slowly decreased to about 2 hours now.
How? Very simple. I always fully charged the battery (100%), then unplugged it and ran my laptop on only the battery until I got either the "battery is low" warning or it ran completely out of juice, more often waiting until the battery died completely. Result: a battery that still works great after 8 years!

So as long as you are doing basic things like e-mail, web surfing, etc you should get decent life out of it.
