Overview

Introducing the Apple DVI to ADC adapter, which allows you to connect any Apple flat-panel display featuring an Apple Display Connector (ADC) to a computer with a DVI port.

The combination of the MacBook Pro or PowerBook G4 with a DVI (Digital Visual Interface) port and the Apple DVI to ADC adapter delivers the pure-digital viewing experience of Apple's professional-quality displays.

The Apple DVI to ADC Adapter is also a superb solution for Power Mac users who need extra workspace of the highest visual quality (requires Power Mac equipped with DVI port). Use it to connect an additional ADC-equipped Apple flat-panel display to a Power Mac computer with a DVI port, and you'll have the ultimate digital desktop.

If you have a MacBook or iMac (Intel Core Duo) with a Mini-DVI port, you can combine this DVI to ADC adapter with a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter (sold separately) and enjoy all the benefits of your ADC monitor.

The Apple DVI to ADC Adapter offers much more than just a physical connection between a DVI port and a digital ADC monitor. It has been carefully designed to maintain the digital integrity of the video signal for the best possible viewing experience. The adapter provides an all-digital signal path between the computer and the display. It features active components that regenerate both the digital graphics and USB signals coming from the computer. This ensures delivery of the highest-quality images even at the extremely fast signal rates used by the Apple Cinema HD Display.

This single unit includes a power supply, power cord, and DVI/USB cable.

Massive box adds extra expense and clutter...

Written by WL from Los Angeles

If you order a new G5 and expect it to work with your Apple Display Connection equipped Cinema Display, think again. Imagine opening your Apple Computer to find that it isn't compatible with your Apple Monitor, and there is no easy fix except to order this big, clunky expensive adapter. I can understand if this is a fix to make a PC product work on a Mac, but this is Mac to Mac. There is nothing wrong with my 20" Cinema, why would I want to replace it with the current model? I am really upset by this. More

    HUGE

Written by IO from San Francisco

This adapter is huge, contrary to Apple's pictures on this page the device takes up a massive amount of space. It is as big as the Mac Mini so kinda defeats the purpose of buying a nice little mac mini to save space and look good. All this results from Apple's dumb decision to go with ADC in the first place. Beware, Mac Sleep Function Does Not Work

    Written by KR from Kodak

I was also annoyed when I bought the top of the line studio display monitor and the top of the line G5 and then found I had to spend $100 to connect the two! After connecting I found the computer would no longer wake from sleep, then after a few minutes the fan in the G5 speeds up so loud I think it is going to explode. It does this every time I put the computer to sleep using this adaptor. Plug a different monitor up to it without this brick and the G5 works fine. After a year and a half of having to shut the computer down every day instead of sleep the power supply in my G5 just burned out. Thanks Apple. More

Works fine. Dimming is now back thanks to "Shades" utility

I have used this adapter for a couple years. It works. However, you loose the dimming feature, that is when connecting it as an external display on my MacBook. However, thanks to the freeware "Shades", I can now dim the display! More

    ADC to DVI Adapter

    Written by BA from Springville

    Oct 17, 2009

I bought it, hooked it up to my 20" iMac, 2.4ghz dual core and my old 23" HD Cinema Display (this also required the mini dvi to dvi adapter which I got on web auction for $5). It works perfectly! The USB ports in the back of my old display work perfectly as well and they power my devices that need allot of power like the iPhone. I chose to buy straight from apple because of the horror stories I read here on the old versions of the adapter, I wanted to be sure I got a new one. I am very happy with my purchase and how well it works.

I don't love having to spend $100 bucks, but now that I have the adapter I can see why it is so much money. I went to buy a firewire cable locally and it was $25 - $35 for a simple cable. So maybe the adapter price isn't that unreasonable since it also has a USB adapter and a power supply built in.

Apple messed this one up in more ways than one

Written by BP from Fort Collins

    Oct 6, 2009

I have owned Macs and been a Mac fanatic since the original 128k Mac came out and I have to say that this was the worst thing Apple has ever done. (The "hockey puck" mouse was an ergonomic mess but at least it worked.) First, when you upgrade to their new powerbooks they charge you $100 to get an adapter to use your Apple 30" display. Second, you have to wait months to actually get the adapter. Third when you finally get the adapter it produces noise on the beautiful 30" display to the point that at times (when there was dark background) it was almost unusable. Fourth, when you find out through these posts that everyone is having the same problem Apple does nothing to admit to the problem or contact people that bought these that there is a problem.

Finally with no official word from Apple and all the sometimes contradictory information on these posts (and after waiting for Snow Leopard to come out since some information inferred that it was fixed in software but alas is wasn't) it was finally revealed that there was a firmware upgrade in the new adapters that fixes the problem. So after a trip to an apple store 2 hours away, and some push back about exchanging my old adapter for a new one (since it has been a year since I ordered it), the new adapter does work much better. however I have to say that there are still occasional static streaks visible on black backgrounds.

So after purchasing nearly a hundred Macs over the last 20+ years Apple has really disappointed me on this one.
