    About Thunderbolt

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

Thunderbolt gives you up to 10 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

They get knocked around in my bag and then brought out and dumped to in the harshest of environments and not one has ever failed. And they're fast as all get out. OK, yeah, I wish Apple wouldn't have insisted to WD (and Lacie) that they use an attached thunderbolt cable. One sheath on a cable end got a little loose. No biggie though, i just pushed it back on. I did notice that a couple of them have fans that are louder than the other and that's a tiny bit annoying, but that's it. If you're working on the road as a filmmaker, photographer or artist, this is your drive. You can dump to it quickly and you can use it to edit from. Oh yeah, it's also bus-powered. Something that took Lacie forever to notice and develop. I use these things on airplanes all the time.

    Excellent drive.

It's fine for making videos under 4 minutes in length, but beyond that, when working with titles or generators, or when working with multiple transitions, the drive's performance drags and drops, and FCP crashes or hangs—not quite the thing you'd want to have happen as you try to finish your project while under deadline.

I'd suggest examining your needs before buying this. I haven't quite found an alternative, though.

I took the device to local Apple store and it would not power up on any of the Mac systems in the store including the iMac. It would only power up when connected via the Belkin Thunderbolt Hub. Not very portable.
