    About Thunderbolt 2

Thunderbolt is a revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices via one simple port and a cable that carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express data. And it’s standard on every Mac.

PCI Express is the technology that links all the high-performance components in a Mac. And it’s built into Thunderbolt, which means you can get PCI Express speed outside the box.

With Thunderbolt 2 now built into the new Mac Pro and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can connect up to three 4K displays at once. Thunderbolt 2 gives you up to 20 Gbps in both directions, allowing for super-fast data transfer between peripherals. You also have enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch.

Thunderbolt also provides double the power of USB 3.0, delivering 10 watts to peripherals for improved performance on the go.

We needed a portable solution that we could not only take with us offsite, but more importantly something that could give the team the bandwidth to edit the 4K footage we shoot. Long story short, here's a very rare case where you absolutely get MORE than you pay for.

The screenshots show the Pegasus2 sitting right next to your workstation. That would be fine if the thing wasn't so noisy. At first I thought it was synchronization, then I thought it was only when writing to disk. No, even on idling, this thing is noisy. I'm using it primarily as a media server and even when in the next room, I can hear the thing crunching away. I can't do any serious work while having it on next to my Mac Book Pro. I'm going to have to hide this thing in a corner somewhere but that brings me to the second issue.

The Thunderbolt2 cable that is supplied is short, meaning you need to have it sitting next to your workstation. With the noise, I'm going to have to invest in a longer cable.

Maybe if your environment has a lot of ambient noise the Pegaus2 will blend in, but in my environment, the noise gives me a headache.

  • Tons of performance!

I am impressed at how fast this is. I had a first-generation FW800 Pegasus and it wasn't very fast. This new one is incredible. I I am impressed at how fast this is. I had a first-generation FW800 Pegasus and it wasn't very fast. This new one is incredible. I am shocked at how fast everything is. This is the kind of speed I've been waiting for.

I've have mine configured as RAID6. In theory this is not as fast as RAID 10, but it gives me some extra space that I need.

Using the AJA system test, File Size Sweep, 4096x2160 10-bit RGB video frame size, here are the results I get (mind you my unit is about 70% filled, and I have a bunch of other stuff running at the same time). File system cache disabled for this test.
