I love my Bose SoundLink, so when I saw this Marshall Stanmore at the Apple Store it was indeed an impulse buy. But once I brought I love my Bose SoundLink, so when I saw this Marshall Stanmore at the Apple Store it was indeed an impulse buy. But once I brought the unit home, I was so glad I caved-in to my impulse. The Stanmore sounds so much better at home than in the store.

The Stanmore paired easily with my iPad and iPhone (5). Never in the evening did I experience a drop in Bluetooth reception.

The unit does not have an internal battery, so that helps to define its use. It's powered by standard household current with an internal power supply; no external transformer cords to mess with. I love the volume and tone control knobs on the top, as I often like to tweak the sound quality. I know I can go into my Apple iOS settings, but adjusting the knobs is so easy and immediate (and retro).

We have nice in-wall speakers, but this little box filled the entire room with rich sound. Last night was mostly acoustic Diana Krall; at no time did I feel the Marshall was a compromise to my component system with this musical genre. I tried my classic test: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' "Moanin' "; oh my god, I could just feel the spittle from the sax mouthpiece flying across the room. The clarity and response makes this little Marshall black box paired with my iPhone my new favorite sound system.

True confessions - I did test a classic pedal bass response from Tracy Chapman's "Mountain O' Things", and that's where the Marshall can't resolve the ultra bass response like my component sub-woofer; I didn't expect it to. The bass it did render though was rich and deep; you could feel the air puffing out the back woofer port. Like the SoundLink, I got better sound when I let the music bounce off the back wall.

I still like my Bose SoundLink for it's portability and big power from a little box, but I've found my new front-porch, back-deck and man-cave musical companion with the Marshall Stanmore.

And oh, it looks cool too; nothing cheap about the look and feel here.

The sound quality was OK when it worked, but there was a delay in sound when using bluethooth which doesn't make it adequate for watching movies. I bought it only because of the design. I took the decicsion to not have it repaired and get a better speaker instead.

It has been lightly used (less than 10 hours total) and kept in its box. After making room on my desk for the speaker to have a long term home, I plugged it in night before last to find that it won't work. It will not turn on, period, not even an LED. I emailed Marshall customer service along with a copy of my Apple Store receipt. Here is their reply:

"Thanks for contacting us. I am really sorry that you are experiencing issues with your Marshall Speaker. I am afraid that I cannot offer you warranty support for this speaker: the warranty expired in November 2014. The Authorized Service Centre in the US is United Radio and you can contact them directly to make repair arrangements for your speaker. You can get in touch with them through their website, www.unitedradio.com. Please note, all repair and shipping costs will be your responsibility. Thanks, please write again with any further questions or comments. Best regards, Sherri - Customer Support"

The only previous issue I had with the speaker was last summer when I plugged it in to listen for a while. The Bluetooth quit working for no apparent reason, and the speaker would not respond to any user input. Turning it off and on did nothing. I then turned it off and unplugged it for a few hours, after which it seemed to work normally.

I bought this product for three reasons: (1) it sounded good, (2) it looked good, and (3) it was not made in the Peoples Republic of China. I wish now I hadn't wasted my money - it is essentially junk at this point. This product is less reliable than British cars. I strongly urge readers to avoid Marshall products like the plague. It won't work, and they won't fix it.

The device plays for 3-4 minutes only (via bluetooth) and then it just gets unresponsive. Nothing helps, only turn it off and wait The device plays for 3-4 minutes only (via bluetooth) and then it just gets unresponsive. Nothing helps, only turn it off and wait for few minutes. The same with different devices connecting to it - iPhone, Mac. The device is completely unusable, will bring it back tomorrow. Hope this is just this model.

On the bright side, the quality of sound is really amazing! The inbuilt speakers of all my laptops and other portable electronic just sound plain and squeeky compared to those speakers! +1 star!
