    The answer is NO. As of this date, it doesn't matter who else has posted reviews, the DropCam is NOT 100% reliable! I can say this with confidence because of others' experience whom I'm working through the same issues. The DropCam CVR servers/network causes multiple drop-outs. This knocks the camera AND recording offline. These drop-outs can range from 30 seconds to permanent.

    There's no mechanical Pan/Tilt/Zoom; any adjustment is done digitally, and must be within the current frame. Artifact become pretty severe at full zoom which is around 8x by their claim.

    The microphone (for talking through the camera) function is virtually worthless due to extreme network lag of at least 10 seconds. Recording is fine, however, since it's synced with the video.

    This is a SINGLE CAMERA monitoring system; one at a time. So, even if you have multiple cams, and use the iPad, you'll only be watch LIVE on one camera. Plus, at $200 each, I don't know how many people would want to install 4 or 5 of these.

    As for the good...

    The technical support staff seems to be very busy, probably handling all the latency issues, but is very courteous and fairly responsive. They seem to want to address the network issues as hardware, but...we'll see.

    This is a very nice camera with a very good picture, wide angle, and REALLY GOOD IR for night-vision!

    The motion-sensing works very well as does the sound-triggers.

    The software-both iOS and MAC-is decent albeit very basic. The UI is pretty and ormal and takes some getting used to in order to navigate.

    The setup is near perfect; about as simple as you can get.

    Range is "ok"; not quite as strong of a receiver as an iOS or Laptop, but not too bad.

    It's powered by a USB cable, which is kind of good. It means a fatter cable than necessary for just power, but it serves as the setup cable as well...which isn't needed except for setup. You can use their power adapter...or, you could use any other USB source such as a battery-pack, laptop, etc. This is useful for locations that don't have a plug, but limited to battery life. This little camera gets pretty warm, so I'm guessing the current draw is pretty heavy.

    The design is cool, efficient, and the quality looks near perfect.

    This product gets a lot of positive reviews, and within a very narrow set of requirements, it can be great. For me it is the most disappointing product I have purchased in a long time.

    First the good.

    1) The image quality is very good in various lighting.

    That's it. No more good.

    1) ALL video gets sent out through the internet before coming back to your house. Besides the creepy factor of not being able to disable this, is creates huge delays, and lowers the video quality you can actually see in the end. I have a very fast low latency internet connection, and yet standing right there in the same room with the dropcam, I timed up to a 10 second delay in the so called "live" image. Yes, even if your viewing device is connected to your same home network as the camera, it still sends the video/audio out to the internet and back again. This is entirely inexcusable IMO. Checking on the support website this is the most requested feature yet dropcam by their replies seems to place little priority on it.

    Thinking of using this as a baby monitor? Better think again.

    2) Even though they use public licensed pieces of software to operate the camera, they connection is completely proprietary. That means you can only use their software to view the camera and their software is quite lacking. Other cameras can be used with a wide variety of 3rd party viewing software.

    Hmm. If you could use the dropcam with any standard software, you could choose any number of video recording options should you want such a service. Something is beginning to smell very rotten here.

    3) Dropcam claims you can view the camera through any web browser on a computer. This is not exactly true. The computer viewing experience requires flash which is an ADD ON to browsers, not part of the browser. Flash is such a poor technology that Apple for years now has refused to install it on their computers. You have to add it yourself. If is full of bugs, security holes, slows down your computer. There is a built in browser standard called HTML 5 that all newer browsers support, but forget about that with dropcam.

    4) Want to share you camera video with relatives? Forget about it. Seems you can either share it publicly with the world, or give away the farm by providing your full access login credentials.

    I can't help but come away with the feeling this camera for dropcam is all about continuing to extract money from customers after the sale. It seems the reason for such a poor experience and software design is to lock you in to their "cloud recording" as your only option should you want to record any of your video stream.

    I am returning mine, frustrated that my valuable time, was wasted. Dropcam leaves a bad taste in mouth as to me it seems they are more interested in locking customers into a shoddy proprietary experience in the hopes of ongoing revenue, rather than providing a decent customer product and experience.

    Better than advertised/ Exceptional audio detection, two way microphone, exceptional night vision automatically as it gets dark, a Better than advertised/ Exceptional audio detection, two way microphone, exceptional night vision automatically as it gets dark, alerts for motion and/or audio as desired, allows multiple private viewers anywhere in the world with login and password on the internet, make video clips and e-mail, tweet or put them on YouTube, wide view, crystal clear picture, move it around the house as needed, remote storage of video by Dropcam and even if they steal the cameras you still have access to the video. Much more than meets the eye.

    I bought this camera for my house to monitor my dogs from my office. The younger of the two dogs had gotten to be a little destru I bought this camera for my house to monitor my dogs from my office. The younger of the two dogs had gotten to be a little destructive so with the microphone and speakers, easy set up and price it sounded like a no brainer. After a week I liked it so much I bought a second one to have more coverage of the house. All worked pretty well at first with a few connection problems here and there. The dog got yelled at from work, stop destroying completely plus it's just cool to see what they are up to during the day as well as the coming and goings of the dog walkers, cleaning people etc... I have had them for over a month now and the connection issues are really wearing on me. I mainly use the ipad app on my ipad air. I have a smaller 2500 sq ft house with a very strong internet signal in every room. Both cameras are one room away from my newer Apple router and I have the fastest internet available from my cable company. My work internet is the fastest possible connection available due to job requirements. With all that, there is never a period longer than 5 minutes or so where I don't lose a connection. I either get the spinner saying "loading" or the blank "lost connection" screen. Most times it comes back but it takes a while or I switch cameras or close and reopen. They should have had time to work the bugs out of this by now. Yes it's a lot less than installing full home security system and easy to use and set up but what's the point if it can't keep the video rolling for more than a few minutes. I'm past the return period so will probably sell on ebay and look for higher quality.

    My daughter’s car was involved in a hit and run in front of my house. I bought the cam to record cars driving by so that I can see My daughter’s car was involved in a hit and run in front of my house. I bought the cam to record cars driving by so that I can see if the perpetrator drives by again and then get the license plate number. I hooked it to the 12 volt power in my car and the camera worked. However, not only does the camera drop out often, the picture is not clear enough to distinguish a plate number. In my research I read where it is supposed to have enough resolution to see a license plate number. I suppose if the car is not moving that works. On another note. I’m forced to use ICLOUD. I wanted to record right to my computers hard drive and review my video from there to reduce the amount of bandwidth that ends up bogging done my wifi network. Doesn’t look like that’s possible. On another note I want to zoom in on the picture or scroll threw frame by frame so that I could try and make out at least one number on the license plate. However the software is very basic so there is no way to do that. Basically, it is a web cam but you can’t stream to your computer either. Why? It only works on the Wi Fi even if you plug it into your USB port. On another note. My I cloud doesn’t know I have this DROP CAM and I only have a few days left to sign up for I cloud. Yes I’m logged into to apple and I’m logged into Drop cam. I’ll have to come up with another way to catch the guy who drove by and smashed my daughter’s car but this DROP Cam won’t do it.

    I am an electronic surveillance professional working in the field for many years, so I've seen and installed countless different t I am an electronic surveillance professional working in the field for many years, so I've seen and installed countless different types of analogue, digital, and IP camera systems. The biggest misconception I notice with most people is they expect FAR too much out of these types of cameras. Stop letting Hollywood fool you. I install professional camera setups daily that are exceedingly far more expensive than this product alone, and quite frankly, don't necessarily work as well and aren't nearly as simple to set up. The video quality out of this little device is easily equivalent to that of a unit 5X it's cost. Is this device the best quality home surveillance camera on the market? Of course not. However, the quality you get out of this device for the price you pay is well worth it. As reported, there is a little delay while viewing the camera image online (the reported 10 seconds is a bit of a stretch), but you will get that from ANY camera system viewed remotely. I said "delay", not "lag", like previous reviewers have - in the industry those are different terms with different meanings. The delay is nowhere near substantial enough to no longer be considered real time. This camera can't be accessed on the local network, only via the "cloud", which has it's pros and it's cons. It also can record only in the cloud, which again has it's pros and it's cons. The optional cloud recording feature does have an additional cost, but you get the peace of mind knowing that your footage is in a monitored data centre and not stored in your home, where can be damaged by fire, water, power loss, power surge, theft, etc. It would be nice to have the ability to store locally as well, however you would then have the cost of maintaining a local storage device (with constantly spinning hard-drives, these break more often than one might think, resulting in costly hard-drive replacements). Ultimately, these cameras are fantastic for the price, image quality, streaming quality, uptime, recurring costs, secure connections and recording, and ease of setup. If you're looking for a indoor home monitoring solution, this is your device. Keep in mind that if you have the optional cloud recording service, your camera is streaming constantly through your network connection (I've noticed around 3GB transferred per day - make sure you have enough available bandwidth on your internet plan).
