  • Overview

The Lytro Camera is in the vanguard of camera technology, offering light field capture in a consumer-level camera. It lets you and your friends refocus photos or shift their perspective after you've taken them. And with the camera's Wi-Fi capability and the free Lytro app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can easily share images on the web. The 16GB camera can store up to 750 Light Field Pictures (.lfp), while the 8GB model holds up to 350.

    See all the light

The Lytro Camera is one of the first consumer cameras that records the entire light field instead of a 2D image. And that changes everything.

    Shoot now—focus…whenever

By capturing the light field, the camera lets you do such remarkable things as refocus pictures you've already taken on your camera, your iOS device, your Mac, or on the web.

Do more than tell a story

Now every picture you take is a chance to tell a new kind of story — refocus, change perspective, and add Living Filters to create a new look.

Too much fun to keep to yourself

Too much fun to keep to yourself

Using the free Lytro app and your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch—or the free Lytro Desktop—you can easily import and share your pictures with your friends on the web, Facebook, and elsewhere.

    Change your perspective

Lytro’s newest light field capability, Perspective Shift, allows you to interactively change your point of view in a picture, after you’ve taken it. On your Mac or iOS device, you can shift the living picture in any direction; left, right, up, down, and all around.

Unless it is a bright sunny environment and the objects are still and the camera is still then great pictures can be created. Other circumstance - forget it. This is not the fail proof point and shoot camera you are looking for.
    - after doing a demo with this camera I cannot even give it away for free !

I have had a Lytro for about a year. I didn't expect it to replace an SLR, I just wanted something that would make product photos I have had a Lytro for about a year. I didn't expect it to replace an SLR, I just wanted something that would make product photos from a light box easier to focus.

This is a clever camera in so many ways. It not only shoots photos that can be focused or perspective shifted after taking the photo but they can be uploaded to a website where other people can do the same.

If exporting to jpg, the photo size is flattened to a 3 megapixel equivalent square frame photo so don't expect to print canvas or posters from these.

This works best as a simple macro point and shoot for ISO200 or brighter environments.

Software is downloaded from the web with the camera connected to a computer. Software is for Mac and Windows.

The idea of this technology is intriguing, I have published a number of photo books on Blurb, mostly using photos from my Nikon point & shoot, and I have an SLR and an iPhone 5s - all of them are easier to use and produce better photos. It is almost impossible to see the Lycro's screen on a sunny day, the square image is very limiting, the actual quality (in terms of pixels and resolution) is very small compared to any of the other choices. I cannot see a good reason to buy this, rather spend your money on a new iPhone or on one of the new point & shoots that are small & have great quality.

I've taken photos up close and inside of equipment that would be impossible with any other camera. It will not give great results of distant fast moving or low light items. If you want to take a picture of a flower, or of a hard to focus close up item, it is the best. Read about its features, and if it does what you want then you will find it a robust nice addition to your camera collection. Oh Yeah, find something to hold the lens cap or it will be gone quick.

I feel like reviewers who gave this product a poor review bought on impulse and did not do their proper research. I have thorough I feel like reviewers who gave this product a poor review bought on impulse and did not do their proper research. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking photographs with this camera. Exported pictures are only 1.2 megapixel (But guess what? You can print that.) and I'm going to be honest, they're not all the highest quality on earth. It's expensive for a hobby camera, but if you're really into this sort of thing, it's worth it. I will reiterate, this is not a point and shoot camera. It is a hobby camera. This is an oddball technology but it's really cool! It's fantastic for close up stuff. If you're really into macro photography, this might really peak your interest. Do your research, make sure it's a product that fits what you're looking for. Don't just go on the facts listed on this site, there's a lot more to the camera than what's been fit into the description. I personally think it is a fantastic product. If you've got a pal with one, borrow it! Test it out first. I'd like to see more people review it for what it is rather than giving it a poor review for not meeting expectations (expectations that could have been different had some research been done).
